Looking for Thomas Cosgrove (b. 1820 – d. 1903) who left Northern Ireland in 1850, give or take a year, for Connecticut, USA. He married Maria Kennard (b. 1826 – d. 1897, Connecticut, USA). Maria also came from Northern Ireland. Thomas Cosgrove was followed to Connecticut by brother, Hugh Cosgrove (b. 1830 – d. 1893), and sister, Eliza Cosgrove (b. 1839 – d. 1905), married to Alexander Achison/Atchison, Connecticut, USA, 1885. In Connecticut, these individuals used the names Cosgrove and Crosgrove.

Two known siblings remained in Ireland: 1.) Ann C. Cosgrove (born 1817), married to George Bennett, Inch, Down, 1838, and 2.) Sarah Elizabeth (born 1842, died 1902 Belfast), married to James Brownlee, Lisburn, Antrim, 1860.

His father, per the death certificate of Thomas Cosgrove, is George Cosgrove. George Croskery appears for Sarah Elizabeth Croskery at her wedding in Lisburn, Antrim. My only knowledge of the family’s origin is the locale of the two weddings in Inch, Co. Down and Lisburn, Co. Antrim. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your query

As you probably know, the start date for parish records varies depending on the parish. Some records begin very early while others start relatively late. As you can see from the link below, Inch is a Civil Parish in the west of Co. Down.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction=TownlandsInCivil&civilparishid=833&civilparish=Inch&citycounty=Down

The Church of Ireland records for Inch begin in 1767 and the records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Kilmore (Crossgar) begin in 1837, as you can see:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Down&parish=Kilmore&churchid=453

The Roman Catholic Parish of Lisburn is located in the Civil Parish of Blaris and stretches into Co. Down. Unfortunately, the records for that parish do not survive.

As this is the case, you could search www.familysearch.org or www.rootsireland.ie (a subscription site) for information on your Cosgrove ancestors Inch. You could also try to locate the Cosgrove family on the Tithe Applotment Books 1823-1837. The tithes were a payment on agricultural land and while they only name the head of the family they can prove useful.

Best of luck with your search

  • Thank you, Clare. My Irish ancestors were protestants. I have only found the two marriages. So far nothing in Tithe Applotments. Not sure if I should consider the possibility that George was using a different forename or middle name in other affairs. I will keep scratching away at this mystery. Eventually, I will get another clue. Merlb
