I wonder if anyone can help me with information about the Balfe family.  I can first trace my great grandmother Elizabeth Balfe in the 1871 Census in the town of Todmorden, England.  She is the wife of Patrick Dowling.  They were both born in Ireland.  I am told with a good degree of certainty by a second cousin of mine that  Elizabeth Balfe was born in Tullamore in 1848.  They were married in Manchester in 1874 and Elizabeth's father's name is given as Patrick Balfe (deceased) , occupation Farmer.I have a copy of the marriage certificate of Elizabeth Balfe to Patrick Dowling.  In the 1881 Census Patrick and Elizabeth are still living in Todmorden and another Balfe - Anna Balfe - is living nearby.  I am told by my second cousin that Anna was Elizabeth's sister.

Another piece of fascinating written information I have from a first cousin once-removed who writes of her Grandmother Elizabeth Balfe: "I was told when young and have always believed it to be so, that she was related to Michael William Balfe, the composer of operas - though I don't know it for a fact".

Sadly, that is all the information I can give you about my Balfe connection.  However I have my fingers crossed that someone can shed some light on the family for me.  Thank you, in anticipation

  • Sue:

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie  has an 1848 baptism record for an Elizabeth Balfe in Co. Offaly (Kings Co. in the 19th century). Not sure if this is your relation but you may want to register on Roots. There is a charge to view a record.

  • Hello have you found much more information on the balfe family? My family came from Ireland but most of us ended up near Manchester (alot of them are still there although my great grandad and great nan have passed on now and theres across the pond etc. Would love to know more about my ancestors, we are related to Micheal William balfe aswell there is not many balfes on this planet and we are all pretty much related through some blood line. My dad is a only child but he has many cousins under the balfe name but we don't actually know or speak to any of them. So would love to know more about our history before it feels like it was wiped out.
