Note to others: I found my grandmother's birth registry record for the Superintendent's Registrar District of Tulla, classified on civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie as being in the Civil Registration District/Office of "Galway". She was born in Knockatunna, Feakle Civil Parish, Barony of Tulla Upper, but one needed to look under Galway to find it. The image clearly shows Tulla as the Superintendent Registrar's District. My grandfather was born in Gortavrulla, part of the Scarriff Civil Registration District/Office, and there no problems with his records.

civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie allows users to recommend report errors in transcription but not for the SR District/Reg Area (a.k.a. Civil Registration District/Office). Other records for family members are similarly classified as "Galway", instead of "Tulla".

  • Dear Clare Football Grandson & ImaClune:

Yes, that is an issue that has been brought to the website's attention, and it should be corrected at some stage.  In addition, it is important to note that after about 1896, most of the civil registration for Tulla changes back to Scariff.

By the way, ImaClune,  I'm also a Clune too!  (Greatx2 grandmother).

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Jane -

My grandmother, Mary Walsh, was born in 1902 and the Superintendent Registrar's District shows as Tulla. Her next younger brother, born in December 1906 also shows as Tulla (with the indexing still connected to Galway). The youngest one, born in 1909 shows as Scariff, with the townland still being Knockatunna.  Perhaps, the switchover was gradual over time.

  • It may have been.  The change occurred when the Poor Law Union of Tulla was reamalgamated back to Scariff.  The workhouse closed about 1909 or so. Some civil registration events can show up in several places depending on what townland people were resident in.  It's always a good idea to double check.
    Good luck with your research.

    All the best,

    Jane
