Trying to trace my gggrandmother back to Ventry.  Eliza (Elizabeth) Walsh (Welsh) born 1828, immigrated to U.S. around 1849 possibly, settled in Kentucky and married Daniel Shea, born 1824, Ireland, in 1854.  Her tombstone is located in the Paris, Kentucky Mt. Olivet Cemetery, and shows "Ventry" inscribed.  I have her death as 1895, but the tombstone shows 1893.  I have had some reseach done by a geneaologist that believes she was the daughter of James Walsh and Helen Begley from Ballyferriter.  Trying to find some confirmation for this as some other information turned out to be incorrect.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The free site www.irishgenealogy.ie has Co. Kerry church records up to 1880. I found two Elizabeth Walsh baptismal records in Ballyferriter RC parish with parents James Walsh and Helen Begley. The first baptism was October 24 1825 but there is a second record showing a baptism on February 23, 1828. Usually this means the earlier child died young and they used the same name for a later child.

This family lived in Ballinloghig townland in Kilquane civil parish. Kilquane parish is on the north side of the Dingle peninsula and Ventry parish is southwest of Kilquane parish on the south side of the peninsula. Usually an emigrant would have used the largest nearby town as their place of origin so I would have expected that Elizabeth would have used Dingle but she used Ventry.

Ventry is part of Dingle RC parish and baptismal records start in February 1825. I guess it is possible that your Elizabeth was born before February 1825 in Ventry and no baptismal record would be available. Your genealogist found the Elizabeth Walsh in Ballyferriter and shared that record with you.

Do you have any names of siblings of your Elizabeth? There are four baptismal records for siblings of the Elizabeth in Ballyferriter so if we can match up names then you can confirm the Elizabeth in Ballyferriter.

  • I have access to the Bapismal records for St Mary's Dingle which include VENTRY. I have reviewed 30 entries for the surname Walsh from 1828 to 1837. I found only 6 entries for Ventry or Townlands in Ventry but none that match any of the names provided. Prior to this date the records are mostly un-readable. These cover the years 1824 to 1827. Sorry but did not find anything encouraging.
