Can anyone tell me where the surname Naylen came from?  My lot left Ireland mid 1800's for UK.

I looked at the 1848-1864 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and there were no Naylen records. There were a number of variants including eight Naylon records (7 in Co. Limerick and 1 in Co. Clare). You may want to go to www.rootsireland.ie  and register. Searching Griffiths is free. If you enter Naylen, you will get over 500 repsonses with various variants of the name. Another site to search Griffiths is www.askaboutireland.ie  This site won't give variants but will provide a response for each name you enter.

  • Thank you Roger.

I doubt if I'll ever get original spelling, it seems to have varied over the years and even today people get todays version wrong!

By the way my GGGF Anthony married a Catherine McDonnell, also from Ireland, in Wooler, Northumberland in 1851, her father being listed as Alexander, a shoemaker.  Any conenction?

My McDonnells come from Carracastle a small Co. Mayo village near the Co. Roscommon border. I can go back to my GG grandfather John approximately 1815-1880. I don't have names of his siblings but I'm not aware of any Alexanders in our family.
