Looking for any information regarding the family of  William Drought. According to his death certificate he was born in Roscrea (Kings County) Offaly in 1831. He dies at Merton in Victoria, Australia in September 1891. William emigrated in 1851 aboard the Emperor and he sailed to Sydney. In August 1861 he married Mary Elizabeth Kilpatrick. He eventually took up land in North East Victoria and had a large family of 10 children. His parents (who remained in Ireland) are listed on the death certificate as John and Catherine Drought. There was some discusion that he may have visted relatives in Canada before setlling in Australia. Thanks. Daryl Hodson

  • Hi to Daryl Hodson .  . .

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . . and the Town of Roscrea.

The Family surname " Drought " is still in frequent use . .here. . .and  in  the surrounding areas of Roscrea . . .

Roscrea . . the Town . . back then . . .was the Postal address for three neighbouring Counties . . Kings Co. ( now Offaly) Tipperary Co.( the Town) and Laoise Co. ( then Queens Co ). .  . .

    When I searched . . . back then  . . . on Ancestry . . and Roots (paid) . . . for Kings Co. . . . WILLIAM (b.1831) . . . there are NO records showing . . .

    SO . . . I concentrated on the Father . . . John. . .  and Mother Catherine . . .

There would be a large concentration of that surname. . . at that time . . . as farming Tenants of thr " Darby " family . . of " Leap Castle " of Aghancon, Ballybritt,Kings Co.

    I found the Death notice of. . .  a . . . JOHN ( see below) who died in 1903 . . . and who is registered in the National Census of 1901 . . .aged 85 . .

    he is living alone ( a Cottier) . . . so presuming  . . maybe . . .  this is YOUR John . . . his wife Catherine has predeceased him . . . and  I could not find a Death notification for her.

    Next I searched . . . a TAX roll . . surviving from that time . . " Tithes Applotment " (1823 -1836) . . .which shows an amount of Drought's . . on the Lands surrounding Leap Castle ( see below) . . . including a JOHN . . .  (5) Doc below is original entry of Tax Roll . . .

See Map below . . .for District of Leap Castle . . .

I'm NOT sure . . where those Drought families chose to be buried . . . but they do not appear in the C of I. (St.Cronan;s) Roscrea.

    http://www.interment.net/data/ireland/tipperary/stcronan/index.htm

    Most likely . . . they were buried in Aghencon C of I. graveyard . . . which was the small Church to the Castle  . . . .

    TRAVEL out of Ireland . . . was NOT recorded . . . that far back . . .

SO  . . . whereas we have found nothing on your William . . . I do hope that the rest . . MAY . . add to the sum of knowledge . . .

There is a Car Dealership in Roscrea . . . trading as Owean Drought and Richard Drought . . . which you may wish to find on-line and make contact . . .

    The history of Leap Castle . . . is well recorded on-line . . .

    Cheers . . . E.M.H.

  • Hello Eamonn, many thanks for your information, I know the difficulty with searching for such common names in a time when record keeping was not as precise and my on line efforts have drwan many similar conclusions. We are somewhat lucky in Australia in that we have very good records regarding family research that stretch back to the arrival of the first European settlers in 1788, the convicts especially, were endlessly recorded! William Drought became a well repected pioneer of the colony of Victoria and has left a lasting legacy in his many descendants that live in Australia today. Again thanks for taking the time to provide assistance.

  • Hi Daryl . . .

    By coincidence . . . a query on the DROUGHT families . . came in 10 days after you . . . from the U.S.A.

    https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/message-board/looking-robert-droug…

    It is possible . . . that the two families . . . are related . . .

    Cheers . . . Eamonn.
