Good evening, I am new to IrelandXO. Looking to share information on John Keenan 1797-1874, spouse Anges McHeachie 1799-1877, and their 13 children. I am a descendant of their son, Thomas A Keenan 1838-1931.

Regards,

Keenan -

  • Keenan,

Do you know what denomination your family was, and do you have any idea where in Co. Antrim they lived?

  • Thank you for your reply.  I do not know what denomination where they lived. I traced them from the U.S. back to Ireland via US Census records.

  • Keenan,

Without some idea of their denomination and where they lived in Co Antrim, it’s a needle in a haystack.

I looked in the 1901 census of Co. Antrim. There were 462 people named Keenan. 337 were Roman Catholic, the rest were a mix of Protestant denominations. There was no-one named McHeachie anywhere in Ireland in 1901. I’d say that name has got changed or mistranscribed since the family left Ireland. Maybe it was McKechnie, something like that. That’s fairly common in Co. Antrim. (They’d be mostly Presbyterian, so of Scottish origins).
