Looking for more information on the GORDON and JOHNSTON families of County Down. Sarah GORDON married William JOHNSTON but so far I cannot locate a marriage record for them. They migrated to Australia with a number of their children in 1841 as Bounty Immigrants on the barque Allen Kerr. Isabella, aged 6 or 7, was one of their children. She married Henry McILLREE at Belvoir (Wodonga), Victoria, in January 1855 and died at Biggara Station, Upper Murray in December 1898. Isabella is buried in the Corryong Cemetery, Victoria. Her obituraries refer to her as being a dedicated member of the Church of England and a "native of Dundrum, County Down". Dundrum, Down is in Kilmegan Parish. Other Australian records suggest Isabella was from Belfast (some 30 odd miles from Dundrum). Both families were probably from Scotland and "planted" in Ireland in the 1600s. Grateful for any other leads.

    I had a look on www.rootsireland (pay site) for the marriage record and couldn't find one with the bride's surname Gordon included in the search criteria but found William Johnston + Sara married 1829 Antrim & the parish is Belfast Presbyterean

    I guess they must have been born about 1810 + - 5 years? If so there are 5 Sarah Gordon birth/baptism records: 1805 Antrim 1805 Down 1810 Derry 1811 Monaghan 1812 Down

    There are 33 for William!

    I had a look at Sarah's 2 Down records; the 1805 is from Saul & Ballee Lecale RC parish but the 1812 is from MAGHERALIN CHURCH OF IRELAND so the religion is right.

    The list of parishes for Down on rootsireland (click magnifying glass at the right of the entry) does not include Dundrum or Kilmegan but Magheraln seems to include many town including a few Drums & a few Kill....s

  • Hi I have Sarah Johnston (Nee Gordon) dying in Eaglehawk (Bendigo) 26th July 1862..her parents were John Gordon (Miner) and Mary.. her children were John ; Thomas (My Ancestor) ;Alexander ; Rosanne: Eliza; Daniel; Isabella; Catherine; James; Abigail.cheers Col.Johnston.

  • Also on Sarahs' DC it has she was 63 when she died in 1862 .
