Hi Everyone,

I am looking for help tracing the birth of my GG Grandfather born about 1841 + or - two years.  My direct ancestors name is William Ryan and according to 1871 census even though he was living in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England with his wife Mary Ann (Maiden Name Fielding) the census says his place of birth is Belfast, Ireland.

I know that records were destroyed in 1922 therefore I am looking for a volunteer who is resourceful enough to trace a record of birth for my ancestor.  The only solid information I have is that his Fathers name is/was James Ryan.  James is recorded on William's mariage certificate to Mary Ann Fielding.  You may find James recorded in Latin as Jacob and William's name in Latin is Guillelmus.

William's wife Mary Ann Fielding is proving just as challenging as according to 1911 census Mary Ann was born in Dublin, Black Rock.  Mary Ann is listed in 1841 census, age 4 months and at the time of this census Mary Ann was living with her Mother Betty Fielding (Unmarried) at Newchurch, Lancashire, England.  Due to boundary changes Newchurch eventually became part of Bacup, Lancashire but the Registration District did not change and remained Haslingden Registration District.  I know for a fact that Betty Fielding did not register her daughter Mary Ann either in Haslingden Registration District or any other district for that matter.  I checked with the General Registration Office (GRO) for her year of birth 1841 and the GRO found nothing.  On her marriage certificate i have discovered that Mary Ann lied about who her parents were.  The marriage certificate which only records the Bridge's Father is listed as being Andrew Fielding but from the 1841 census I know for a fact that Andrew was her "Grandfather."  However, according to website Lancashire On Line Parish Clerk records the following:

Marriage: 4 Mar 1864, St. Mary of the Assumption, Burnley, Lancashire, England.  William Ryan/ Maria Anna Fielden (Surname spelling variation) Christian name recorded in Latin.  Groom's Parents are listed as Jacobus Ryan and Maria Ryan i.e. James and Mary.  Bride's parents are listed as Andrew Fielden and Honora Fielden.  I do not know what Andrew and Honora is in Latin but both names i.e. Andrew and Honora are both wrong.  As i mentioned above in 1841 census Mary Ann's Mother is Betty, but even this is a Nick name for Elizabeth, in Latin this could be spelt Elizabetha or Eliza.  I read on a website that the name Bridget is a form of Elizabeth but I don't see how?

I would welcome some help from a volunteer who could look up birth records from Dublin, Black Rock.  Having exhausted all evenues in UK I hope someone on this website can trace the birth of Mary Ann Fielding, born 1841, daughter of Elizabeth (Betty) Fielding.  My theory is that when Betty's pregnancy started to show her Father Andrew Fielding literally sent his daughter far away and consequently Betty gave birth to Mary Ann in Dublin, Black Rock.  After Mary Ann was born, Betty returned to UK with her daughter which explains how Mary Ann's name was included on the 1841 census.

I would be grateful to anyone who can track down the parish and birth in Dublin, Black Rock and find the birth of her husband William Ryan.  Thank you.

    Hello Susan,

Many of the church records are online at www.rootsireland.ie  and www.irishgenealogy.ie .  All that I can suggest is that you trawl through these sites and see if you can find them.

    Regards,
