Searching for ancestors of John Todd born 1843 in Ballyroy,County Antrim (from 1911 census). Father Samuel. John went to England before 1880 and settled in Yorkshire (he was an iron shipwright). He married Emma Walker (born 1853) in 1883. He migrated to South Australia on the "Belgic" in 1912 with 3 children (the youngest - George Raymond Todd - was my grandfather). The eldest 2 boys had already come to Australia in 1910.

Thanks Col for your reply.
My mother remembers her grandfather John (and grandmother Emma) being very bigotted Protestants! My grandfather was Presbyterian so I would not expect the Catholic match to be correct. I understand Presbyterian records are not very good prior to 1837. His birth date is a bit dodgy - he changed his age on various occasions to seem younger!
I found some Samuels in Griffiths Valuation but no idea which one is correct and it doesn't help with John's birth (or whether he had brothers and sisters). He moved to UK before the 1871 census.

What was Samuel Todd?s occupation, as per the 1883 marriage certificate? (That may help me advise you on what records may help you).
Ballyroy or Ballyvoy is in the parish of Layd. The nearest Presbyterian churches are probably in Cushenadll and Ballycastle. The family might have attended either. Cushendall have no records prior to 1853. Ballycastle has records from 1829 onwards.
Neither church?s record are on-line. There is however a copy of both in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. However a personal visit is required to locate them.
