Dear Sir or Madam,

Just discovered this website by chance yesterday.  Hope someone can offer help with the following:

I have NO ideas which parish my ancestor WILLIAM RYAN was baptized at but according to the  England census for 1871 my direct ancestor William Ryan was born about 1843, BELFAST, Antrim, Northern Ireland.  However, if William was born in East or South Belfast he could have been born in County Down according to internet.  Also, I am having difficulty finding the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census, therefore I have no idea when my ancestor arrived in England?  Did he arrive alone or with his family?

What I do know is that William Ryan married my direct ancestor MARY ANN FIELDEN on 4 Apr 1864.  William and Mary Ann married at a "CATHOLIC Church"  The name of the church was:  St. Mary (Formerly Known as Burnley Wood Chapel) located on Yorkshire Street and Turf Moore, Burnley, Lancashire, England.  As I ordered their marriage certificate I discovered that William's Father is/was JAMES RYAN.  James may have been born about 1820 and is my Great, Great Great Grandfather.  The marriage certificate also revealed that Mary Ann Fielden's Father is/was ANDREW FIELDEN.  Andrew was probably born in 1820's and is my GGG Grandfather.

According to English census records Mary Ann Fielden was born in Ireland.  The surname FIELDEN does not strike me as being an Irish surname?  All of the census records I have just say place of birth was Ireland except 1911 census which says Mary Ann was born in DUBLIN BLACK ROCK.  I have no idea if this is true?

According to 1911 census William and Mary Ann actually had six (6) children but two (2) children died.  I have been unable to put names to the two childfren who passed away.  The Four (4) children who did survive include:

MARY JANE RYAN born about 1865, Lancashire, England (I do not know where Mary Jane was born in Lancashire?)

JAMES RYAN born about 1867, Wood Top, Habergham Eves, Nr. Burnley, Lancashire, England

SARAH ELLEN RYAN born about 1869, Burnley, Lancashire, England

ELZABETH RYAN born 14 May 1875, Huncoat, Accrington, Lancashire, England. (My direct ancestor).

Elizabeth Ryan married my Great Grandfather ARTHUR BANCROFT born 18 Sep 1879, Accrington, Lancashire, England.  Elizabeth and Arthur married at Hyndburn Register Office on 9 May 1899.  Elizabeth and Arthur had three (3) children as follows:

Alice Ann Bancroft born 1 Jul 1904, Oswaldtwistle, Nr. Accrington, Lancashire, England

John Bancroft born (Last Quarter) 1906   Died First Quarter 1908

George Bancroft born 1908 (Last Quarter)

My Grandma Alice Ann Bancroft (Daughter 0f Elizabeth Ryan who married Arther Bancroft) married my Grandfather Harold Bullock (Second Quarter) 1936 at St. James, Accrington, Lancashire, England.  St. James is Church of England.  My Grandmother had my mother who is still alive.

William and  Mary Ann's daughter Sarah Ellen Ryan married George William Blenkinsopp on 4 Jun 1887 at Habergham Eves, All Saints, Lancashire, England.  George and Sarah had three (3) children:

Mary Ann Blenkinsopp born (Third Quarter) 1887 Burnley, Lancashire, England

John Alphonso Blenkinsopp (Fourth Quarter) 1899, Padiham, Lancashire, England

Valentine Blenkinsopp born about 1895, Padiham, Lancashire, England

Mary Ann Blenkinsopp married WILLIAM JOHNSON on 15 Feb 1908, Clayton Le Moors, All Saints, Lancashire, England.  Mary Ann and William had the following six (6) children:

Mary Ellen Johnson born Jul 1911, Great Harwood, Lancashire, England

Gladys Johnson, Jan 1913, Great Harwood, Lancashire, England

Irene Johnson, June 1916, Great Harwood, Lancashire, England

William Johnson, Jun 1921, Great Harwood, Lancashire, England

Clarence Johnson, June 1926, Great harwood, Lancashire, England

Eva Johnson, Dec 1927, Great Harwood, Lancashire, England

Mary Jane Ryan (Daughter of William Ryan and Mary Ann Fielden) married John Moss, (Third Quarter) 1885 at Burnley Register Office, Lancashire, England

If you wish to see the rest of my family tree you can email me at:  susan.e.ford@comcast.net    Please note I have 3 dots in my email address.

I look forward to receiving a response from anyone who thinks they can help me.  Thank you.

  • There is an area of Dublin called Blackrock, so the information that Mary Ann was born there seems reasonable enough. (It?s s suburb in south Dublin, in the civil parish of Monkstown & RC parish of Blackrock).  Her birth would be before the start of civil registration (1864) and so you won?t get a birth certificate for her. Looking at this site, it doesn?t appear there are any RC baptisms for that parish prior to 1850, so you may be out of luck there:

Fielden is not a common name in Ireland (there are a handful in the 1901 census) but plenty of people from England and elsewhere lived there from time to time, so possibly she is descended from such a family. Or possibly the spelling of the surname has changed slightly.

The censuses for 1841 ? 1861 for England & Wales are available on the Ancestry site.

It?s correct that part of Belfast is in Co Down. However most of it is in Co Antrim and many genealogy websites treat it all as being in Co Antrim, for convenience. Many RC records for Belfast are not on-line and so tracing William?s baptism may be tricky. (As with Mary Ann he was born too early for there to be a birth certificate). Copies of the records for RC churches in Belfast are held in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. They are not on-line and a personal visit is required to access them. However don?t expect too much information, even if you find this baptism. Normally all that it will contain is the child?s name, parents names, 2 sponsors, and the date of baptism. No addresses etc. (And it may be in Latin).
