My Great Grandfather was William Gilchrist b 1858 County Antrim his father was Hugh Gilchrist and mother was Jane McNeice, William Gilchrist moved from Ireland to Scotland and married in 1881 to Agnes McMullen who was also born in Antrim Ireland, on their wedding certificate William was shown as a Widow but have been unable to discover who his first wife was.  the 1881 Scotland cencus shows William and Agnes living  Civil parish: Greenock Middle  County: Renfrewshire  but ny the 1891 the family had moved to England to West Ham, Essex.  William and Agnes had six girls one of which was born in Antrim Ireland she was Elizabeth (Lizzie) Gilchrist b 1893.

Any help to find my Irish ancestry in Antrim Ireland would be so appreciated, living in Australia I am not able to visit Ireland myself.

Regards

Sylvia

  • Sylvia,

I searched for births for Elizabeth Gilchrist 1893 in Antrim. There were none for that year. The nearest was Lizzie Gilchrist born 29.9.1892. Her birth was registered in Ballymena Oct ? Dec 1892 Vol 1, page 73. The mother?s maiden name was Mullan. So that might be the event you are looking for. You would need to pay to view the certificate, or order a copy of it, to check the father?s name and get the family address etc.

I think Ballymena is the area your family came from because I found this marriage:

Hugh Gilchrist to Jane McKeown McNiece, regd Ballymena 1849 Volume 2, page 65. Hugh?s father?s name was William.

You can order a photocopy of these certificates from GRO Roscommon for ?4 each.  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can?t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.

You also have the option of viewing the certificates immediately, on-line on the GRONI website:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

(You will need to open an account and buy some credits. However you will only be able to view the certificates. GRONI won?t allow you to print them off).

I searched for a marriage in Co Antrim or Down 1876 ? 1881 where the groom was William Gilchrist. There were none, save for 2 in 1880 where the fathers were Alexander & Joseph. Could William?s 1st marriage have been in Scotland? (I searched Scotlandspeople for the years 1876 to 1881 and found 26 matches, 3 of which were in Renfrewshire. You might want investigate some of those marriages to see if any had a father Hugh.) If there were no children then they probably weren?t married very long.
