I am trying to find relatives/ descendants of the savage family in Belfast. My gg grandmother was Mary savage born in Belfast around 1815. In 1827 she married Patrick Mahoney a so,died in the queen's own who was posted to Launceston., Tasmania Australia. He died and she remarried Bernard Sweeney my gg grandfather who was also a soldier from Sligo. He died in 1849 and she remarried John Joseph Moore a printer from Belfast. She had two children with Patrick Mahoney, James Patrick and Mary and four with Bernard, John, my g grandfather, Elizabeth ( who died as a baby in 1840) and Twins Catherine and James born 1842. Mary died in 1880 and is buried in a paupers grave outside Hobart. Any asdistance in tracing the savage family much appreciated. Tania Sweeney Sydney Australia

  • Thank you elwyn  and col. I am not certain of Mary's religion. I know she married Patrick Mahoney in 1837 in st Patrick's church Belfast, ( Catholic) witnesses were  her brother John and mother Mary. She married Bernard sweney in Launceston in 1836 in a Protestant church because that is all there was. I think he was catholic as he is buried in the Catholic part of a Launceston cemetery. John Moore her third husband converted to Catholicism but I think that may have been his choice not because of marys religion. Mary is buried in a paupers grave outside of Hobart. • Tania,

It sounds to me as though she was Catholic. The oldest RC church in Belfast is St Mary’s but its early records are lost. (It opened in 1784 but has no records before 1867). You could also try St Patrick’s which is probably the second oldest church in the city. It has records from 1798 and they are on-line on the NLI site:

In the 1780s there were only about 300 Catholics in Belfast. However the opening of shipyards and linen mills brought huge numbers into the city from all over Ulster, and so going back a generation or so, you might expect Mary’s ancestors to be amongst those.

  • Dear elwyn I found the marriage of Mary savage to Patrick Mahoney at st Patrick's church Belfast city January 1827. Witnesses were John her brother and Mary Mahoney ( presumably his mother or sister). I have been in touch with the church. Thank you Tania Sweeney
