School in Doagh, Co. Antrim

According to the Ordnance Survey memoirs (1832) there was just one school in Doagh, which was a National School. As far as I can tell from PRONI’s e-catalogue, it was just known as Doagh National School.  The OS memoirs say that it had 90 Protestant & 3 Catholic pupils, 49 males & 44 females. The school received 10/- per annum from the National Board and the scholars paid from 1/1 to 3/6 per quarter.

Griffiths Valuation in 1862 likewise lists just 1 school in the village.

Almost all the population of Doagh were said to be descendants of Scots settlers who arrived in the 1600s. Only 30 houses in the village in 1832, so 1 school seems about right.

I checked PRONI’s list of school attendance records. It does not appear that the attendance records for Doagh National School have survived. Others schools nearby were Cogry, Ballybracken, Palentine, Ballyvoy & Kilbride.
