Don't have much information to go on.  I believe my biological father was born in County Armagh in 1926..  His name was James Alexander.  His father was William Alexander and his mother was Ellen Byrne.  William lived on an estate with his uncle (no name).  Ellen Byrne was a maid/servant at the estate.  Unfortunately, my grandfather, William, go involved somehow with the Black and Tan organization, and was run out of Ireland.  Before he left Ireland he married Ellen, and their first born son, James Alexander was born in County Armagh.  Ellen followed William to America after James was born.

If there is any way to find information about my heritage, I would appreciate finding out about it.

I believe William had 2 sisters, but not sure where they lived, and why he was sent to live with his uncle on the uncle's estate.

My appreciation to anyone who might be able to shed some light on this.

I found my first cousins, here in Canada, and one is going to Ireland in February to see if she can find out any more details about our past history.

Thanks so much.

  • Debbie,

What appears to be William & Ellen?s marriage was registered in Stranorlar, Co Donegal in Apr ? Jun 1924 Vol 2, page 143. If you order a copy of that marriage cert it should give you William?s father?s name and from that you may be able to trace him in the 1911 census.

You can order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon for ?4.  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can?t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.

If James Alexander was born in Co Armagh in 1926, then the indexes to those births are not on-line. You would need to contact GRONI in Belfast who keep the post 1922 birth registration records and ask them to search for his birth cert.  I think the search fee is ?5 plus ?15 for the certificate itself.
