My maternal grandmother was born May Beatrice Courtney in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

Her parents, Edward Noble Courtney and Harriet Courtney, emigrated with their then two children, to Canada from Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England.

Edward's father, also named Edward Noble Courtney, was born in Armagh and/or County Armagh in 1811.   moved to Stratford from Armagh, or from a village/town in County Armagh, in the early 19th Century.  And his father, also named Edward (unknown middle name) Courtney, was born in 1766.

Edward Noble Courtney (1811-1891) married Catherine Coles.

Edward Courtney (1766-1861) married Dorothy Talbot in Armagh.

I believe the Courtneys were Methodists. One may have been a Methodist preacher.

I have a copy of a letter written by an Edward Courtney from Armagh, dated 1830.

Any help in learning more about my Courtney ancestry would be appreciated.

  • Rootsireland (subscription) has one record in Co. Armagh for a marriage of an Edward Courtney born c 1811. I can?t tell you who he married because I don?t have a subscription.

Regarding the family denomination, Methodism took longer to become a separate denomination in Ireland than was the case in other countries (largely because many Methodists wanted to remain part of the Church of Ireland). There were no Methodist baptisms anywhere in Ireland before 1818 and no marriages before about 1836. They continued to use the Church of Ireland for baptisms and marriages, even though they might otherwise be attending their own Meeting Houses. So if searching church records pre 1830s, you probably need to focus on the Church of Ireland. Copies of most of the surviving church records for Co Armagh are held in PRONI in Belfast. They are not on-line and a personal visit is required to access them.

There was an Edward Courtney of Newry (which is partially in Armagh) who had probate granted in 1787. A transcript of his will survives. PRONI ref: T618/321/15.

  • Douglas

Marriage on Rootsireland in Armagh between Edward Courtney and Elizabeth Noble took place on 25th November 1807. No residence unfortunately but Edward's occupation is 27th Regiment of Foot. May be of interest because of the bride's surname of Noble.

  • Thank you for the information.  Slowly some of the gaps in my ancestry research are gaining some content.
