I am looking for any information on my Great.....Great.............Grand Mother Suasn Cook born 1855 in Copney Parish Clonfeacle Armagh Northern Ireland. She married William G Roger and  migrated to Queensland Australia aged 22 arriving 2/7/1877 on the ship City of Agra departing London. I have been searching Ancestry.com but have no luck going further with Susan.

  • I think Susan?s marriage was to William George Rogers and was registered in Armagh city 1877 Volume 1, page 86. If you order a copy of that certificate it should give the couples fathers names, occupations and other information to trace them further.

You can order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon for ?4.  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can?t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.

Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church (which will be on the certificate unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That may be the place to look for the bride?s baptism and that of any siblings.

Griffiths Valuation for 1864 lists a William Cooke in Copney who had a farm, outbuildings and just over 15 acres of land (plot 21a & b). He also had a share of some other land on the townland. That might be Susan?s family. (That farm today is on the Clonmore Rd).

1 Cooke household still there in 1901:

    and in 1911:

Here are a couple of probate abstracts (summaries). The full files are in PRONI, Belfast.

  • The marriage cert shows that both Susan and William had fathers called William.
