Hello all, there is a lead that my great grandfather, Isaac Sinnamon, came from this area.  He was born in November of 1851 but left to go to Philadelphia USA in 1873.  There are Sinnamons listed in the area, a Darcy Sinnamon seems to have owned a parcel of land so perhaps this is his family.  Any ideas on what to search or look for now?

I appreciate your help.

  • Hello Debbe

You can view a transcript of D'Arcy Sinnamon's Will on www.proni.gov.uk - just follow the links to the Will Calendars.  D'Arcy had both sons and daughters but Isaac is not listed as one of them.  I checked all the remaining Sinnamon Wills where there is an image to view but again no Isaac Sinnamon.

Take a look at the attachment - is this Isaac's death certificate?  If it is then it lists his father as James.

  • Yes!  Thank you, Veronica.  I'm certain this is him because his wife was Margaret E Sinnamon and the address is the same as listed for his daughter when she attended school in 1918.  I don't know why it says that he was "S" under marital status.  How amazing that you were able to find it.  I have tried various searches but was unsuccessful.  (thank you!)  This explains so much too.  I always wondered why my father's grandparents didn't stay involved in his life when his mother died with young children.  Isaac was deceased before his grandchildren were born.  I wonder if Elizabeth might have been too...

James must be Isaac's father.  There was not a James listed in the Griffiths Valuation of Armagh in 1864 though.  hmm  Any suggestions?

I thought it strange also about the "S" under marital status - probably clerical error.

I've done some more digging and there is a Tree on the Ancestry Website which appears to include Isaac - only they came from Pomeroy, Co Tyrone - a little more digging and Aghafad seems likely as the place they lived in.  The Isaac in this Tree had parents James Sinnamon [also spelled Cinnamon, Cinnamond, Sinnamond] and Elizabeth Kidd.  Siblings of Isaac include Henry, Benjamin, John, Mary, James, Hamilton, Elizabeth, Annie and George  - do any of these seem familiar?  Also, was Isaac's wife Margaret Elizabeth Hume?

I'm attaching a death record for James Sinnamon [son of Isaac and Margaret E].  I also came across a baptism record for a Margaret Elizabeth Hume which gives her date of birth.  Don't know if this is your Margaret but take a look anyway.

  • Veronica,

I do not have any info on Isaac's Irish family so names do not seem familiar or unfamiliar but yes, Isaac's wife was Margaret Elizabeth Hume and she was born in February 1859 so this ought to be our Margaret!  I am excited because we did not have her parents' names either and that is new info.  The baptismal record is in Philadelphia?

Elizabeth Hume's parents were from Ireland also but that is all I've known about her.  The parents and family of my grandmother, Elizabeth Sinnamon, have always been a mystery to us as she died when my father was 5 and as an adult, he didn't seem to know anything about her family.  Your help is appreciated.

Yes the birth record is from Philadelphia.  There are some more which I assume are Margaret's siblings attached.

I looked at the tree on Ancestry again and unfortunately the records of the Church Isaac's parents married in and I assume the children were baptized in are not available at the Public Records Office - you would have to contact the Church directly.

I'm also attaching death records for Thomas and Elizabeth Hume who I believe were Isaac's grandparents.

  • Thank you, again, Veronica.  I believe they would be Isaac's in-laws though.  Isaac married Margaret Elizabeth Hume and Thomas & Elizabeth were her parents I believe.  So T & E would be Elizabeth Hume Sinnamon's (my grandmother) grandparents then.

I'm going to make a drawing of this as a visual reference.  I'm amazed at the records you've accessed.  When you mentioned the church in which Thomas & Elizabeth Hume married, are there records whether they married here in the US or in Ireland?  Perhaps I might assume the same church that they used for the baptism was the church in which they married?        How do I find out when people arrived in this country?

This is exciting.  I looked at the County Tyrone website and have just discovered the websitemanual which I will look at tomorrow.

You have been very helpful and again, I appreciate your time.  I appreciate your help.

Yes, you're right they were Isaac's in-laws.  I may have confused you more by mentioning the Church - it was actually the Church Isaac's parents were married in - they were married [according to the tree on Ancestry] in Altedesert Church, Pomeroy in 1848 but as I said these records are in the custody of the Church and not at PRONI.

  • Hi Veronica, are you saying Isaac's parents (if he is the Isaac from Pomeroy) are known to have been married in Altedesert Church in 1848?  If I contact the Church, it may be possible for me to access or have a copy of that record?

My husband and I are attending a daughter's wedding in Germany this summer.  We have planned the trip to fly in and out through Ireland as I've always been interested to see the beauty of the country.  Although he has to return immediately, I am planning to take a few days with another daughter, her husband, and my sister to stay and travel a bit.  We had planned to take a train across the country to Galway and spend a couple of days before returning to Dublin and the States.  I did not expect to have so much information regarding the family tree (!) but perhaps can travel to the church to request a record if that is the protocol...   Although my sister had visited Ireland before, she traveled unaware of our family connection and we all look forward to the trip with new eyes.

  • Hi Veronica, I was looking on the web and wanted to ask if this is the church to which you referred?

    http://www.genuki.eu/TYR/Church21.htm

Also, I noticed a 'donate' button at the top of the homepage.  When I clicked on it, I was redirected to a different site but it did not still have the Irelandxo group listed.  The Internet is tricky but i wanted to check to see if that is still and active campaign and does 100% of the donation truly go to the Irelandxo group?

I believe that is the Church - it is the one mentioned in the Family Tree on Ancestry but only that Isaac's parents were married there - I don't know where they got the information and why, if the children were baptized there they wouldn't have that recorded on the Family Tree.

Not sure about the 'Donate' button - if you use the 'contact us' button and explain they will get back to you very quickly.
