Hi,

Am trying to track down any ancesters of Matthew Cummings, born about 1822 in Armargh. He came to New Zealand, via Melbourne, to fight in the Maori Land Wars, mainly in the Waikato area. He met, and married, Annie Cunningham, from Glascow, Scotland, in the Thames area, New Zealand.

Other than this small amount of information, I know nothing more about my Great Grandad Cummings. His son Arthur married Ruby Fearon, and their 4th child, Vera Jean married Fredrick Herbert Hand. I'm their 3rd child.

  Many Thanks,

Shirley

  • Shirley,

Difficult to find any records from the early 1800s without a bit more information.  You have put this post under the parish of Armagh. Do you have evidence that Matthew came from that parish, or was it just that he came from somewhere in Co Armagh?

Do you know his religious denomination? (If it helps, the 1901 census of the county has over 70 people named Cumming(s). 41 were Church of Ireland, 11 Presbyterian, 6 RC, 3 Quaker, plus some Plymouth Brethren.).
