I just heard from another research that my great great grandmother came from Mayobridge, Newry, County Down, but she did not have any sources listed.  I am trying to locate records to verify this.  My ancestor was Catharine Moore was born  Jan. 14, 1838.  Previously, I only knew that she was from County Down.  She first married John Trainor, but I'm not sure if that happened in Ireland or in the United States.  John Trainor died June 12, 1860 in Pennsylvania.  Shortly thereafter, Catharine married my great great grandfather, John McGovern.  They lived in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States.

Can anyone tell me if online records exist for Mayobridge from 1838?

My apologies if this is the incorrect board.

  • Linda,

Mayobridge is in the parish of Clonallan.

You don?t say what denomination Catherine and John were.  If they were RC, then the baptism and marriages for that parish start in 1826. If they were Church of Ireland then there are no baptisms before 1884, though marriages start in April 1845. If they were of another denomination then I?d need to know which. (Looking at the 1901 census for the area most seem to be RC though there were some Presbyterian Moores too).

There?s no sign of a marriage in the Irish civil indexes. However they do not include RC marriages till 1864 so if it was an RC ceremony then it won?t be listed.

The RC records for the parish are on the UHF site:

    http://www.ancestryireland.com

However for the other denominations you may need to look up the copies in PRONI, Belfast.

  • Elwyn,

Thank you so much for your assistance.  My Moore's were RC, so I will check out the UHF site.  I really appreciate your help.
