Wondering if anyone knows of Patrick J. Walsh, born March 17, 1871 in Carlow.  His parents were Patrick and Catherine (O'Leary) Walsh. Thanks.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Below is the baptismal record from Find My Past. They erroneously showed Keary as the surname but the parish register shows Leary. The entry shows Cranagh as the townland but I'm guessing the townland was Crannagh in Kiltennell civil parish. The RC parish was Borris. Here is the link to the register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0693

I found eight likely siblings as follows: John 1853 Thomas 1854 James 1856 (likely died young) James 1858 Mary 1861 Mathew 1864 Catherine 1866 Anne 1868

I looked at the 1901 census for Crannagh and found one Walsh family. I think Matthew Walsh was the brother to Patrick and the 70 year old Catherine was Patrick's mother.

  • Hi Roger!
I think you've struck gold!  Is there any way to know which townland they lived?  I'm planning to visit Ireland and would love to get as close to where my ancestors lived as possible.

  • Laura:

The townland was Crannagh in Kiltennell civil parish. The area is about 33 kilometers south of Carlow Town and very close to the borders of Co. Kilkenny to the southwest and Co. Wexford to the southeast.

  • Dear Laura,

From what we read, we think you are a cousin of my mother. She was born in the Walsh home place in Crannagh. Contact us for more information and validate the connection.

  • Hello Carlow C!

How would you like proceed to validate a family connection?  Do you know where the Walsh home place is located in Crannagh?  If it is still standing, I would like to visit.

    Hi Laura,

the homeplace is still there although unoccupied for many decades now. We could arrange for you to meet my mother if you like to discuss the family connection and relations still in the area. my mother has shared this photo of the family grave in Rathana village nearby.

  • Greetings! My husband James Todd Walsh is from the line of Thomas Walsh who was Patrick's older brother and settled in Iowa as well! My husband's dad James Robert or Bob is still alive and well in Iowa. I've been trying to get more detail on the family history back in Ireland but haven't discovered much beyond a Griffith valuation entry. We are hoping to travel with our daughters back to visit in the next few years and would love to connect! Cheers!

  • Hi Carol.

I visited the Walsh homestead in Crannagh last year. If you are in Iowa maybe we could meet to share what I know that might be helpful when you visit. If you are open to this, let's ask the admin people on this site to help us connect.

I will tell you we had a fantastic time! We met my dad's 2nd cousin and her husband who were incredibly nice and took us up to the homestead. Her name is Mary. She's related to Carlow C whom I spoke with but wasn't able to meet. I'd like to go back when the 'family church' in Rothanna has their family Mass and, hopefully, meet more of the Ireland Walsh's.

Have you been to the Holbrook, IA genealogy day? Let me know your thoughts.
