My gr-gr. grandparents are John Doyle and Bridget Maher.  Their children are Peter ( my gr-grandfather, born 1838-1842), Bridget (baptised 1838), Mary (1839); and Edward (1841). I have found my great grandfather's siblings in the Clonegal R.C. Baptisms, 1833-1842.  It says they came from Leany.

When I look at Griffith's Valuation there is a John Doyle in Leany and a John Doyle in Clonegal.  I think the John Doyle from Leany is the right one for me, but I am not sure.  Could you let me know what you think?

Also, Peter was said to have come from Wicklow.  Does Clonegal cover Wicklow as well?

Thanks for all your help.  I seem to be struggling with the geography.

  • The RC parish of Clonegal covered parts of Co. Carlow, Co. Wicklow and Co. Wexford, including the civil parishes of Moyacomb and Barragh.

The town of Clonegal, where the RC parish was based, is located in the Co. Carlow section of Moyacomb civil parish, but right on the county borders, and the townland of Leany where your Doyles are living at the time of the children's baptisms is in the same civil parish and located further north towards the town of Tullow.

That section of the Valuation showing Leany townland is dated 1852, so if 'your' John Doyle was still alive at that time then the one listed on Griffith's in Leany is more likely to be your Doyle household.
