Hi;  John McDonald/McDonnell (born ca. 1802-1820) married Julia Ryan and they had five known children (Mary, James, Thoams, Patrick, Ellen) in Garryhill starting in 1844 until they moved to Ontario, Canada about 1852.  John McDonnell is in Griffiths, having about 10 acres of land.  In the Tithe books, there is a James McDonald in Garryhill with about 6 acres of land.  I am hoping that James is John's father.  Is there a way to know if they are on the same piece of land or some other way to connect them?  I have had no luck with finding baptisms or marriages, but it is nice that John and Julia's eldest son is James.

Thanks for your help.

  • Mary Beth:

This type of question has come up before. I'm not aware of a way to correspond a Tithe record for a townland to a Griffiths record for the same townland. However, based on your information about the oldest son of John and Julia, it is very likely that James in the Tithes was the father of John.

Keep us posted about your trip plans.

  • Darn!  Oh well, it was worth asking.  I will stay with "likely" father.  Thanks for your quick reply.

  • Hi again:  I have learned that John McDonnell was on the Earl of Bessborough's land (Griffiths), and that there are some of the Earl's papers at the NLI.  Do you know if the "Bessborough Papers" (MSS29, 791-29,805) would have anything about him and his small holdings?  I don't mind looking if they might, but I also realize time will be at a premium when I finally get there ( still aiming for 2022!).

  • Mary Beth:

I don't know if there would be any info on John McDonnell in the Bessborough Papers. The odds are small and as you said time is at a premium and better spent seeing Dublin.
