Hello!

I am trying to trace my in-laws' heritage in Co. Carlow. My great great grandmother's name was Julia Bridget O'Connor and she left Ireland for New York in 1904 from Queenstown. She followed her sister Annie (Nan) O'Connor and was eventually joined by other siblings James, John, Tom, Betty, Harriet, Brugha, and Ed. (This may not be all of them)

Her mother (name unknown) passed away and her father re-married before Julia left Carlow (both names unknown).

I am unsure what parish the family originated, just that they were from Carlow.

Anyone that can provide a piece of information will be hugely appreciated. My fiance and I are getting married in Wicklow next September and my new family would love to reconnect with their roots and visit their hometown when they come over.

I can provide more details for whoever can look into this for us.

Thanks so much!

I looked at the 1901 census and there were only 20 O'Connors in Co. Carlow in 1901. I didn't see a record which looked like a good possibility. There was only 1 Julia who was 13 and a visitor in another household. See link below.  You can check it out  at  www.census.nationalarchives.ie  If you have any other info please let me know.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for the reply!

I have a letter with more details that could be helpful to you. Please find it attached. It is lengthy but fascinating! I think it is written by the grand daughter of Julia O'Connor (when she married in the US her name became Waskom).

I know that there is another letter floating around the family which I can try to locate.

I hope this is helpful and will send along the other information when I get an opportunity.

    Thank you again,

    Sarah

I looked at the Ellis Island site www.ellisisland.org and found that she arrived in New York on May 9th, 1904 on the Celtic. She was from Hacketstown so I think the census record belongs to your Julia. Unfortunately, when I try to look at the ships manifest to see who was meeting her, an Italian ship called the Roma comes up. There must be a bug with the Elllis Island softward.

  • This is fantastic! We are so excited to figure out where she was from! And in a twist of fate - we are getting married just a few miles up the road in Aughrim next year!

Is there a way to figure out if any of the O'Connors are left in Hacketstown. Or even the Neills who took care of Julia?

    Thank you again,

    Sarah

I looked at the online Irish phone book with no success. That is not unusual since most people are not in the phone book. Hacketstown does not have a library. I did find the link to the local Catholic church.

  • Julia was my Grandfathers sister. His name was James Bulger O'Connor.  Brugha, Daniel Brugha O'Connor was my Father, Julia's nephew. Julia did marry a Wascom. There is still O'Connor's left in Carlow, Ann, wife or Rory. There are many of the children spread in America. There are Wascoms spread around. one that I have as a friend on FB
