I'm looking for Robert Neill's family. His father's name is Thomas Neill and mother's is Jane nee Coulter. Robert was born 31st Oct 1858 - baptised 5th No 1858 and register in Drumlane Registry Book of Bapttisms - which is lodged in record office, 4 Counts Dublin - June1877. I know that they have a family farm call Belturbet in County Cavan. Not too sure where to start - any suggestions would be grateful.

Regards,

Rae Easton

  • Griffiths Valuation for 1857 lists just one Thomas Neill in the parish of Drumlane. He was on plots 7 & 8 in a townland called Ballyhugh where he had a farmhouse, outbuildings and 45 acres of land. He had a wife Jane, they were Church of Ireland,  and I suspect this is probably your family.

Thomas was still farming there in 1901:

    and in 1911:

Note that in the 1911 census Jane?s place of birth is Fermanagh (Cavan in 1901). She had been married 56 years and had 7 children of which 6 were alive in 1911. Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church so that may have been in Fermanagh.

Drumlane Church of Ireland?s early parish records were destroyed in the 1922 fire during the civil war, in Dublin. A copy of what still exists is held in PRONI, Belfast and probably also the RCB library in Dublin. This is what PRONI have:

C.I. Drumlane (Kilmore diocese) [Earliest registers destroyed in Dublin]

    Baptisms, 1874-1985; marriages, 1845-1932; burials, 1877-1982; vestry minutes, 1796-1888.
