Oliver and Emily were my gggrandparents.

Oliver was born at Drumalee in 1798, and died in 1863 and is buried in Belturbet, in the Church of Ireland graveyard?

I have no idea who his parents were. Emily was born in 1795,  died in 1861, and is buried with or near Oliver.

They lived in or near Belturbet from about 1840, renting a house and land in Chapel Lane.

Oliver was in the 58th Regiment of Foot and served in Jamaica and Ceylon. He was a Chelsea Pensioner.

They had 2 sons  that I know of, Richard b 1828, and James b 1832.

Richard came to Australia in 1888, with Mary (Waddell) and eight children.

It would be fantastic  if I could find relatives in Ireland!

Regards,

Suzanne

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

It looks like the Church of Ireland records start around 1801-1802 in that area so you won't find a baptismal record for Oliver. My only suggestion is to check out the online Irish phone book https://www.eirphonebook.ie/#   Use the Residential TAB and enter Storey in Co. Cavan and two records come up. One is for someone near Belturbet.

Forgot to add that you may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

  • Hi Roger,

Thanks for your feedback, I will check out those phone numbers.

I have had DNA done through familytreeDNA, but so far have no matches in Ireland .

It is possible to upload results to My Heritage which is helpful, but not for Storeys.

My other family is Best, so I will check the phone directory for them as well,

    Many thanks,

    Suzanne

  • Suzanne ...

The surname, "Story/Storey", in your recent post caught my eye.  I have one STORY (Francis) from Annagh in my family database.  He is related to my PRATTs and McCULLOUGH/McCULLAs, also from Annagh Parish.  In August 2005,  I made a trip to the area, and while there I visited the Belturbet C of I graveyard.

I just now checked my old notes from that visit.  At the time, on the chance that Oliver STOREY might be related to my Francis STORY, I had copied out the epitaph for Emily, "the beloved wife of Oliver", whose gravestone I saw.  Apparently I did not photograph her stone.  And I must not have found Oliver's own gravestone, as surely I would have copied out his epitaph as well.  Transcription of Emily's below.

Additionally, I am posting two photos for you.  I'm not certain if the STOREY gravestone image will be at all useful, but I wanted you to see it, just in case if might provide information related to your family.

If PRATT or McCULLOUGH/McCULLA  figure in any way into your Annagh, Cavan ancestry, I would love to hear!

    Best, Jennifer [USA]

  • Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for your message and the photos, I am so excited to have the epitaph also.

Oliver and Emily are my brickwall, which I have been chipping at for years!

I beleive that your Storeys are related to mine, there is a connection somewhere but I can't find it.I have made a tree on Ancestry (Jane/Jean Storey Family Tree) (1) with your family because I was told some years ago that Jane was a relative of mine, and I think she is descended from William Storey and Mary Anne Taylor. They would be her grandparents, I think her parents were William David Storey and Jane Morton.

Jane was born in Belturbet in 1926, she married Samuel (Dennis) Mcneilly Ramsey) and died in Belfast in 2012. I have contacted her daughter but for some reason she did not , or could not confirm that her mother's maiden name was Storey!!

I have not come across any of your other names, but will let you know if I do.

    Many thanks for your contact,

    regards,

    Suzanne in Australia

  • Suzanne ... I can't get this message window to do a keyboard "return" to the next line.  So this will be a bit of a "run on" paragraph. <g>  I would like very much to see the tree you've created on Ancestry.  Unfortunately, I was not able to find it via a search for either the tree name you gave me, nor a keyword search for "Jane Storey".  I'm a subscriber with ID of "JLD2000", and my email is:  jls.david@gmail.com.  May I ask you to invite me to your tree?  Many thanks.  Jennifer  PS:  I made my third trip to Australia this past March, where I visited a cousin in Melbourne.  May I ask where you are?

  • Suzanne ... I meant to mention earlier that I am corresponding with a woman in Wales whose PRATTs were in Drumalee, and with whom I'm also trying to confirm a cousin connection.  ;- )  Jennifer

  • Hi Jennifer,

I hope you are still active on here!

I wanted to confirm something you said about Oliver Storey, that you did not see his grave at the Beltrubet C of Ireland.

So far I have not been able to find it anywhere.

Also, how did you get on with the Pratt connection?

    Happy New Year!

  • Happy New Year, Suzanne! Yes, I still check in here from time to time, and I receive email notifications when there has been a new message posted on a thread I've contributed to. Correct ... I just double-checked my notes ... I did not see a grave marker for Oliver Storey. Just the one for his wife, Emily. But I wonder now after all these years if I simply didn't think to look at the other side of the stone? I'm pretty well practiced in graveyard canvassing, so I don't think I would have neglected to do so, and yet I suppose it's certainly possible. Although if you've not been able to find a grave record, there may simply not be one for Oliver? Or might he be buried elsewhere? RE the PRATT connection ... the woman in Wales and I share a very small amount of DNA, small enough, I have come to understand, that the supposition that we connect along the PRATT line may be a jump to conclusion, at least at the moment without more information. We both do indeed happen to have Pratts in our ancestries, but we may connect on some other line entirely. Disappointing not to be able to discover our link, but not terribly surprising given how many generations ago our connection may lie. I'm sorry to be sending negative news RE your two questions. I've not forgotten the Storeys, however, and I'll continue to be on the lookout for more information. All the best, Jennifer

  • Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for your reply. It seems that we just plod on with our projects!

I have decided to engage a researcher in Ireland. They have the basic information and will decide if further searches will be viable. There are some sites where pics of grave stones are posted, unfortunately, not all of them.

So far I have done all the DNA tests for my brother that are available, and the Noble family members are busy trying to find a common ancestor.

Good luck, and best wishes for the New Year,

    Suzanne
