Hi, trying to trace  Robert Leathem born 1795, townland Derragara, parish Castleterra. Parents John and Catherine on 1821 census the spelling was John Lothem, Catherine Luthin. Robert was recorded as aged 26 on the 1821 census.

My Great Great Grandfather settled in Christchurch New Zealand in 1864 his name was Thomas Leathem. Thomas was born in County Cavan. On his death certificate his father was recorded as Robert Leathem.

It's like trying to track a needle in a hay stack, but I am trying to find a marriage certificate for Robert and a list of baptisim records for any of his children to see if this Robert above is Thomas Father.

Thomas died in Christchurch New Zealand on the 5th Feb 1907 aged 74, so was born round 1833?

Many thanks

Angela

  • Hi Angela

There are 18 Leathems in the Names Search on PRONI (Public Records Northern Ireland) which is a free site. The only Cavan record is this one:

Pre-1858 Wills and Admons Sub-Index : Kilmore Diocesean Wills Surname : Lethem alias. Leathem Forename : Robert Occupation : Farmer Town or Townland : Ballyhaire alias. Ballyhaise Parish : County : Cavan Notes : Description : PRONI Ref : Date : Probate 1813

On www.rootsireland.ie/there are only 3 Lethems born in 1780 /90's & they are all from Blaris, Antrim : Richard 1784, Robert 1790 & Sara 1798; nothing for Thomas 1833+ - 10 years either.

There was nothing for the other surname variations.

No luck on findmypast or ancestry.

I couldn't find any in the current Irish phone book either.
