Hello, 

Just this week I stumbled across a will on findmypast.co.uk, which seems like it might belong to my 4th great uncle, Alexander Oakes.  He died in Cootehill in the spring of 1888 and asked to be buried in "the graveyard of my mother at Drumgoon".  Is there still a cemetery there that dates from this time? I live in Canada and am very new to researching family history, so this possible tidbit of information about my fourth great grandmother is very exciting.

  • Thanks for the quick reply--that's a beautiful video!  I have spent many happy hours in our cemetery with my grandmother (visiting my grandfather), so I appreciate a lovely peaceful site. The video included information about when the Drumgoon graveyard was closed, so I have contacted the County Cavan archives in the hopes that they've retained some burial records. Thanks again for the helpful link!

    Yes there is a [Catholic] cemetery known locally as the Old Drumgoon Cemetery - it was closed by Cavan County Council a few years ago and a new one opened in the parish closer to the church.

    My family home is in Drumgoon but I wouldn't be fully familiar with all the names as I grew up in the UK (my dad is from Drumgoon and we moved back there as a family 20 years ago).

    If you want I can ask dad and see if the name rings a bell with him? The 1901 and 1911 online census is fantastic for identifying ancestors too. If you do get stuck, get in touch with the genealogy dept in the Johnston Central Library in Cavan town, they're excellent.

  • Thanks for the reply!  I have indeed been in contact with the Johnston Central Library and am now waiting until the new year to phone them during office hours. It's a very tenuous hope, since this Alexander Oakes may not in fact be a relative, but the names in his will look like my ancestors' names so I'm crossing my fingers that his mother is indeed my 4th great grandmother. If she is buried there in Drumgoon it will be my first real trail back to Ireland and a good excuse to visit your country again!
