Hello!

I am researching my g g g grandfather Terence Hosey.  Here's what I know:

  • born about 1826 in Ireland
  • emigrated to Brooklyn, New York, USA before 1854
  • married Elizabeth (Eliza) Dunn; not sure if this was before or after he emigrated
  • had at least two children born in Brooklyn:  my g g grandmother Mary Agnes Hosey (1854-1938) and Anna (Annie; born 1863)
  • died in Brooklyn, 1880

I suspect his brother was Michael Hosey.  Here's what I know about him:

  • born about 1819 in Ireland
  • emigrated to Brooklyn, New York, USA before 1854
  • married Mary Reilly; not sure if this was before or after he emigrated
  • had at least two children born in Brooklyn:  Michael (1854-1884) and Terence (1856-1886)
  • died in Brooklyn, 1895

Michael's death notice in the newspaper claimed that he was "a native ofthe Parish of Mullahorne [sic], County Cavan, Ireland."  

Am I correct in that Mullahoran is part of the Drumlumman civil parish?

I am trying to confirm that my relative Terence is from Cavan, too, and to uncover anything else I can about the family.  I haven't found anything that looks promising from searching the rootsireland site.  Does anyone have any advice as to what to do next?

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

    First things first ? you are correct! Drumlumman is a Civil Parish and the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish is Mullahoran (also known as Loughduff and Drumlumman North). Records there begin in 1859.  This is probably why you couldn?t find a baptism record for Terence or Michael; their baptism seems to predate the parish records.

    I take it you have searched for marriage records for Terence and his brother in the US and have come up empty-handed? If we had a parish or townland you could search Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864) for instances of the family name (there are 8 entries for Hosey):

    As a follow-up to my original post. . . I found court documents related to the last will and testament of Michael Hosey (accessed at FamilySearch). The documents confirmed for me the relationship between Michael and my third great grandfather Terence.

    Among the heirs listed in the documents were a nephew and two grand-nephews who still lived in Ireland (I'm not sure if the relatives were from the Hosey side of the family or from Michael's wife, Mary Reilly). The nephew and grandnephews were listed as living in "Tournaross, County Cavan, Ireland." I've attached examples of both typed and handwritten documents that show this.

    Does anyone have any idea what "Tournaross" might reference??? I searched online but came up empty.

    I think the name of the place you are looking for is the townland of Tohernacross. It is located at 53? 50' 23" N, 7? 25' 59" W in the Civil Parish of Drumlumman, Co. Cavan.

  • Thanks, Clare! Griffith's Valuation shows Smith's and Reilly's in Toghernaross but no Hosey's. Perhaps these relatives are on Michael Hosey's wife's side. Or perhaps the Hosey's were gone by then. I'll have to do some more digging.
