My great grandfather, Thomas John McEntyre was born to John Thomas McEntyre and Mary Lynch on the 1 December 1832 in County Cavan. He eventually left Ireland to travel to Australia where he met and married Mary Brigid Curtin. They both finally settled in New Zealand. Thomas has listed his birth place on a number of records in New Zealamd as Lavey, County Cavan. Atleast we think it is Lavey as the handwriting is not that clear and could be interpreted as Laoy. However, that hint has hit a brick wall.
So I am turning to other Cavan parishes in the hope that someone can help. I have found evidence of McEntyres in the 1901 census for Taghart, Shercock,Cootehill, Corduff, Corraville, Corragarry and so on.
The Tithe Applotment books list McIntyres in Knockbride and Lavey. One is an Owen in Feaugh - Thomas had a brother in NZ for a few years , called Owen. We think he returned home.
I am looking for assistance in locating any information about Thomas and his family e.g is his baptism recorded in parish records, are his parent's deaths recorded, are there McEntyre people in the parish today? Any help would be most appreciated

Thank you for your message. I hope that someone with information contacts you and helps you to further your research.
Civil registration did not begin in Ireland until 1864 so you will not be able to get a birth record for Thomas etc. Instead you will have to look at baptismal records. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. There are some places where you can search online, however these do not have complete collections:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
If his parents died after 1864, there would be a civil record of it, however without knowing the when and the where it may be difficult to find these. These civil records are available from the GRO, here is their website:

Perhaps you could try using a local phone book to see if there are any McEntyres listed in the area today. You should be able to find one online, however please note that a lot of people choose to be unlisted in these.
