I am interested in researching the CLARKE families of Laragh, Co Cavan!  Families appear to be those of Owen Clarke, Peter Clarke and Hugh Clarke and probably others

Peter Clarke of Laragh married Mary Murray, date and place unkown!  Their children include the following:

Patrick bc  1843 baptised Kingscourt RC Church married Anne Gologly of Moyar in 1871, Kingscourt RC Church.  Anne was the daughter of Owen Gologly & Martha Beard

Anne bc 1850 married Philip Reilly, also of Lara, 1882 at Kingscourt RC Church.

Bridget bc 1852 married Patrick Gogarty of Dunarigh (Dunaree/Dunam)? in Kingscourt RC Church 1877.  Patrick was the son of John Gogarty & Bridget McKenna

Believe that some members of this Clarke family emigrated to the USA with others remaing in Ireland.  Whilst my research has a long way to go, I post this information in the hope that other Clarke researchers may be familiar with, or offer some guidance on how best to proceed with research in Laragh and the Clarke family in particular!

Thank you for your input!

This looks like the 1901 and 1911 census records for Patrick Clarke and his family. www.census.nationalarchives.ie

  • Thank you Roger for your reply.  The family you referred to almost certainly fit with my information!

I am curious to discover more about the contents of a newspaper article printed in the Irish Independent April 9. 1940  p11 entitled 'Co Cavan People who Vanished'  where Eugene Clarke (of Roebuck House, Dundrum, Co Dublin), Charles Clarke, Eleanor Burns,( Carrickingoan, Coolderry, Carrickmacross) & Bernard Clarke, (Ballyregan, Corcreaghy, PO. Dundalk) were looking for an order to presume the deaths of  Charles & Bernard Clarke who emigrated to America many years prior to the article.  Mentioned also were Eugene Clarke (emigrated 1888) & Peter Clarke, his brother (emigrated over 50 years ago -     c 1890) and a further seventeen extended family members  The above people claimed to be next of kin to the late Miss Catherine Kiernan of Dundalk, Co Cavan, of whose death I have so far been unable to find!  How would I obtain a copy of the court order and any further details of those persons inluded?

    Thank you once again!

  • Hi Amaris,  The address you mention would be in County Monaghan, though you are looking for Co Cavan people who dissappeared.

You say it is a newpaper article, does it say who is requesting the information, is it a solicitor? you could try writing to them.  It sounds like they are trying to extinguish the rights of those who have vanished, so you are loking for the probate of a will which can happen long after the person has died.

mail@nationalarchives.ie have probates of will, you could contact them.

I searched the 1901 &1911 Census under Kiernan only in Co Louth & looked at the women but none seemed to match a wealthy spinster, but I could be wrong.  I searched familysearch.org & found 16 deaths for the period 1930 to 1940, but addresses did not match, you could do another search with a longer time span.

    Dundalk is in Co Louth

For Monaghan connections you could try http://www.countymonaghanfund.com.

You could write to the Editor at the Anglo Celt, it is the local paper & they may publish your letter, include all the details & a phone number and someone may get back to you their contact email is linda@ anglocelt.ie

The Laragh you are looking for is a townland beside Kingscourt town, parish of Enniskeen, not to be mixed up with the parish of Laragh, closer to Cavan town.

You could also try contacting the Cavan Co Library for further assistance.

  • Descendant of John Thomas Clarke who immigrated to USA at turn of century. Married Caoline Lewis and settled in Greece, New York.  Was involved in horse racing. Had eleven children. My father was the youngest, Richard Thomas Clark.  John changed the spelling of his last name when he moved to the States. He died in 1948 from injuries involving a horse racing accident.  Any info on relatives still living in Cavan would be appreciated.

  • Dear Luchase,

Do you know where John Thomas is from, do you have a townland.  If you wish to start a new thread on him please do, also if you have his dob, it would be useful.

  • Luchase, I believe we are cousins! John Clarke was my Grandfather! I've been looking so hard for my ancestors related to him! There are a few differences, but I believe we are talking about the same person! His wife's name was Caroline Alice Lewis. I knew be left 2 brothers behind in Ireland, but didn't know their names. I think the other brother may be Owen. He also had 4 sisters. Kate, Bessie, Mary, & Margaret. Frederick Delos Clark was my father, his 10th child. He immigrated in 1888, & was born in March, 1870. I haven't been able to find out who his parents were, until now....WOW!!!! I am so excited over this! Thank you God!

  • My Grandfather named one of his sons Richard Thomas....possibly after your father...my father's name was Frederick Delos Clark, baptized Delos Fredricum at Mother of Sorrows Church, in Greece, N.Y.. John G. Clark's 10th child.(Clarke when in Ireland). My Grandmother wanted Dad to be named Delos Frederick. They did so at baptism, however, the clerk's office flipped the name when recording his birth September 7, 1918. Richard Thomas was Grandpa's youngest child. If John Thomas Clarke was my Grandfather's father, then that confirms an incorrect suggestion made to me that Grandpa was a "Jr."...I was told that, however, I never heard my father speak of Grandpa being a "Jr.".
