Hello from Chicago! I am working with the Riley family whose grandfather came to America from - they believe - County Cavan, in 1880. His name was John Riley and he lists his birth year sometimes as 1862 and sometimes 1863 (although on the census records for 1900, 1910, 1920 the years are all over the place as 1869, 1860, and 1858, respectively). He may have been on the ship "Erin" with a Patrick Riley, which had a port of arrival at New York on 20 May 1880 - place of origin is Ireland and Point of Departure is Liverpool England and Queenstown Ireland, but no departure date is given. Any information about John Riley would be warmly welcomed as this family would like to visit Ireland after the holiday's.

Reilly/Riley is a very common name in Co. Cavan. Do you have his parents names from his death record or other source? Civil registration of births started in 1864 so it would appear only church records would be available for your John.

The family has his father listed as James, but I think it was John and they believe his mothers name was Catherine/Katherine - I have no dates for these individuals, I'm so sorry...

I searched on Roots from 1858-1862 for John Reilly baptisms with father John and mother Catherine. Two 1860 records came up.
