  • Dear Vin:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site!

There are a number of baptisms for the Anthony Sheridan and Rose Farrelly Sheridan family.

    They are listed as follows:

    1. Anne 8 December 1850

    2. Catherine 11 September 1848

    3. Anthony 19 April 1853

    4. Rose 26 September 1855

    5. Mary 11 August 1842.

These records are available on the Roots Ireland database (transcribed) and on the parish registers for Mullagh at the following link:

    http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0850

In the 1901 Census, Anthony Sheridan is living in Mullagh with his wife and family.  The link in the 1901 Census is below:

    The 1911 Census is below:

It would appear that Anthony was a farmer.

I have copied the post to several of our Cavan volunteers who may be able to make enquiries for any relatives.

If you would also like to create a profile for any member of this family to be displayed under our XO Chronicles, please do so.

  • Dear Vinny,

In that part of Co. Cavan the surname Sheridan and Farrelly are very plentiful.  One way of reaching out to a larger audience would be to write to the editor of the local paper The Anglo Celt and put in all your details, if you have old photographs they love to publish them you can contact them at linda.oreilly@anglocelt.ie  If you are looking for living relatives you will have to widen your search.  The townland of Cornakill is between the village of Mullagh and the parish of Killinkere, in the civil parish of Bailieborough, which is also a town and the town of Virginia is also close by.  You could also contact Cavan Genealogy at  cavangenealogy@eircom.net for a fee they can conduct searches for you.

Best of luck with your search.

  • Thank you so much for the information. It verifies what i have on my Family Tree.  I noticed that there were many Sheridans and Farrellys in the Mullagh area. I think there may have been more than one marriage between the families...... I am going to try to get to Cavan later this year.

    Best wishes Vinny Driscoll

  • Hello from Long Island, New York.

My mother is friendly with a Hoey family living in Navan.  Could this be a connection for you?

Interestingly, my grandmother Sheridan  hails from John Sheridan b. Ireland (Where?) around 1840.  He landed in New Jersey and married a lady who immigrated from Meath.  Do you have any missing John J. Sheridans?

  • Hi Ann Marie... I do have a John Sheridan that i can't findd any info. He was born in Mullagh, Cavan, Ireland. I don't have a birthdate. His parents are Anthony Sheridan and Rose Farrelly,  My Hoey Great grandfather John Joseph Hoey  was born in Rantavan, Mullagh, county Cavan in 1844. He married Rose Anne Sheridan in 1870 and they moved to Moycullen, Roscommon They had 14 children . The whole family emmigrated to the United States settling in the Boston area.........Vinny Driscoll

  • From death certificate of John J Sheridan, looks like he was born around 1846-47, no specific spot in Ireland.  Parents John and Mary.....also born in Ireland.  I suppose the informant was his wife, Ann Garry, of County Meath.  New Jersey death records at the time did not have much information...will check local newspapers....

Not sure if that matches the information you have from Roscommon. If most of your Sheridans ended up in Boston, I suppose John could have wandered to New Jersey?  LOL

The Hoey family my Mom knows are Pat and Mary in County Navan.  She writes to them annually, with simply their name and County Navan.  Guess the postman knows them?  They get the mail!

    Happy searching!
