Visiting Ireland in September, County Cavan

not sure there is a volunteer in that part of Cavan, I have looked around at some sites and the Devan name turns up there in Griffiths on Ask About Ireland as you say in Derrymony, RC Church records only appear to commence for Templeport in 1836, and the name from the Templeport history site which I will attach has the name Devine and Divine, I am assuming there is a transcription or spelling error or some such at some stage. In the townland of Derrymony in the Tithe Applottments there are 2 entries in 1826 for Richard Devine, unless we turn up some land records or a will both probably unlikely as they appear to be tenants of a Rochefort gent. The Templeport site includes mainly Bawnboy but has burial and baptismal records but is not the easiest to navigate, I emailed them myself in a general way previously but got no reply.

DNA matching is most likely way to get results prior to 1836 if that is when the RC records commenced, other religions may have earlier records but they did not turn up when I looked at Roots Ireland, a subscription site. 

On the plus side there are two fairly active Facebook pages for Cavan genealogy, IGPS Cavan and Cavan Genealogy, apply to join and leave a message, use both forms of the name though, I searched both pages and the IGPS Cavan has some Devine hits including one from PA. The other spelling on the Templeport site turns up Divine. I have a Cavan ancestor myself hence I can check the FB pages readily as a member.

I also looked in McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland and Devine is sometimes confused with Davin but that is in Tipperary not Cavan so I think somewhere the name changed, oddly I see two Davan births in Cavan in 1840 and 1842 in Kingscourt, this is a long way from Templeport in Cavan, for the time rather than now, maybe 40 miles or so. 

Have an enjoyable trip it is a pretty spot if a little remote.

You might consider writing to them at the above email address before your trip to see what information they may have.

In addition, it might be a good idea to write to the parish office and to ask them to place a query in their parish bulletin.  This has been done very successfully in Cavan recently by a volunteer and the query generated a lot of interest and some information for the family.  The parish office link is below:

I too am on the hunt for Devine in Derrymony.

Peter and Mary Devine (head of the family born 1780s or 1790s) are buried in Bawnboy and the village that they were from is Derrymony.
My Thomas Devine b1821 was convicted and sent to Australia in 1846.  His records mention his parents were Peter and Mary Devine and sisters Catherine b1823 and Anna b 1825.
Interesting to note that Anna ended up in PA USA married Anton Weisenberger.
Another Hanorah Devine married Bernard Baxter ended up in PA too.   I DNA match this family but can't quite place them.  Hanorah maybe another sister!

So Derrymony is the homeland me thinks.

I would imagine with a thick Irish accent that Devine could become Devan.   Hardly anyone could read and write back then.  SO all variants usually lead to the one source of Devine.

Patrick Devine could be a cousin to my lot?  as the name Patrick is a naming pattern Thomas Devine's family.
