Hi

I'm trying to find connections with Hugh (bc1900/01) and Matthew McLaughlin (bc1901)

Their parents were Patrick McLaughlin (bc 1862 Derry) & Annie Duffy (bc1868 Donegal) Patrick was an engine driver for Donegal Railways and tragically fell to his death from his train in Mar 1901.

1901: Annie Mclaughlin; aged 27; housekeeper; liv 12.2 Magirr Strabane

1901: Matthew: aged 2; liv 12.2 Magirr Strabane

1901: Hugh: aged 6mths; liv 12.2 Magirr Strabane

In 1901 her brother-in-law John McLaughlin and his family were living 12.1 Magirr

1911: Annie McLaughlin: aged 39; laundry worker; liv 13 Eden Tce Starbane

1911: Matthew: aged 12; liv 13 Eden Tce Strabane

1911: Matthew: aged 10; liv 13 Eden Tce Strabane

In 1911 Annie's brother-in-law John McLaughlin and family also lived 13 Eden Tce Strabane

John McLaughlin - his wife Mary Jane Farren - their children Sarah, Frances & Mary

Can anyone help me with Matthew and Hugh? With any of the McLaughlin family?

All the best

Jacqui

  • Hi Jacqui

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the long delay in getting back to you.

One of the latest free, online records available is the above Census. Another way around this (if you haven't already done so) is to search for the family name on the public family trees on Ancestry.com. I have found this useful in my own personal ancestor search; you may get lucky and find a connection (or have someone contact you if you put your family tree up there).

If no one comes forward through our boards and you are interested in finding out more about who was in possession of the house/land from 1911, your latest info, then the cancelled/ revision books can be extremely useful as they can allow you to estimate the dates of significant events in your family's history - emigration and death for example. They can also assist you in finding out the names of potential descendants of your ancestor.

Unfortunately the books are not available online yet in the Republic of Ireland, though I do believe there is a project in the pipeline. They are found in the Valuation Office, Dublin. The NI records are available at PRONI up to 1933:

    http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/val12b.htm

The records were designed to assess land and buildings and apply a value for payment.

Let us know if you earn anything new

    Best wishes
