Hi, I am trying to find connections to the McSorley/McCarthy family:

Susan Gertrude McSorley (b1885 Castlederg?) married (1905 Castlederg) Florence Ambrose McCarthy (c1883 Galway)

Susan was the sister of my gt grandmother Catherine (b1872 Castlederg d1962 Derry) who married (1897) my gt grandfather John Michael McAnee (b1872 Derry d1924 Derry)

Susan and my gt grandmother Catherine were the daughters of Patrick McSorley (bc1848) (a baker in Castlederg) and Susan Thompson (bc 1847). They married 1871 and had 8 children that I know of:

Catherine (1872), James (b1874), Isabella (b1875), Patrick (b1878), Mary (b1880), William (b1882), Susan (b1885) & Bridget (b1888)

Susan McSorley & Florence McCarthy had 6 children that I know of:

John Joseph: 1b906 Castlederg

Florence Emmet: b1908 Castlederg

William Ambrose: b1910 Castlederg

Susan Gertrude: b1912 Castlederg d1913 aged abt 8mths Castlederg

Mary Ellen: b1913 Castlederg

Charles Justin: b1915 Castlederg

I would love to find present day connections and hopefully fill in some family tree gaps and discover 'who knows what!!'

Can anyone help? Do any of the above names mean anything to you? Or maybe you can direct me to someone who could help?

All the best

Jacqui

  • Jacqui,

    Family in 1911:

I see a marriage on the GRONI site between a Florence McCarthy and Brigid O?Doherty on 15.2.1933 in Derry. You can view that cert on-line for ?2, using the search marriage registrations option:

There?s quite a few William McCarthy marriages, 1929 onwards. If you are so inclined you can go through them and see if any had a father named Florence.

There was also a Florence McCarthy death in Strabane on 20.3.1922. That was a neo natal female child, aged 0. However given that this is an unusual family name, I?d guess it was to a member of your family.

No McCarthys in Castlederg in the current phone book.

  • Hi Elwyn

Thank you for your reply. Although I already have these details it's still great to get. You never know what you may have missed.

It can be so frustrating but sometimes, just sometimes, the pieces all fall in together.

    All the best
