Looking for information on Thomas Moore born about 1864 give or take 5 years. His death certicate lists his mothers maiden name as Jennie Connor. His fathers' name is not legible.  The print is difficult to read. I believe he may have immigrated to the United Stated between 1870-1880.  I have been told by his daughter, Thomas Moore came from County Clare. He married in St Mary's Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.  I would appreciate any help you could provide.

Sincerely

Grace

  • Hi Grace,

I was just wondering why you have posted your message on the Ennistymon page? Do you have information about where in County Clare they were from? You should add the death cert image (if you so wish) to this message. Perhaps one of us will be able to work out the writing for you.

Could you please post your message here (Ennistimon): http://www.irelandxo.com/group/kilmanaheen-clare

Bear in mind when you afre carrying out research that the name Connor might come under other variants. See this link: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&UserID=

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Kilmanaheen (Killaloe). These date from 1870 for baptismal records. You can find these at the national Library of Ireland, Pos. 2440, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, ref. no. 0926067. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

You should also check the 1901/1911 census records, as other relations might have remained in the area. You can check these here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Grace!

I assume you were hoping to find more info on Thomas' father. I do have some info on the US side if you're interested, but if you have his death record, you likely have most if not all of the info I have access to...

However, according to the 1900 US census, he lists his arrival year as 1880, when he would have been 16 years old. A quick check of Passenger Lists, finds a 16 year old Thos Moore arriving in New York City 5 April 1880 aboard the Germanic. Listed right above him on the ship manifest are William Moore, Sr (b 1831) and William Moore Jr (b 1861). If this is your Thomas Moore, he perhaps was travelling with an older brother and father...

Maybe someone on the Irish side of the pond can pick things up from here, with those clues?

    Cheers!
