Hi

I'm hoping to find out some information about my g-g-grandmother who we think was born in Ennis, County Clare about 1843.

Her name, when she arrived into Otago in 1883 was Margt / Margaret O'Malley and she travelled to New Zealand with her daughter Bridget O'Malley (aged 22) and her friend Mary Hogan (aged 23). Her daughter Bridget O'Malley was born about 1861 in County Clare.

There is a reference to a Margt Flanagan on the ship records arriving with her daughter Bridget O'Malley so I presume it's the same person. On the ship records both Bridget's were registered as occupation: Gen Serv.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tre

  • Good morning.

I see from the the New Zealand ships records that as you have stated

    Margaret O Malley age 40

    Brudget O Malley age 22

    Mary Hogan   age 23

Arrived on 12 June 1883 on the ship Ionic travelling to both Canterbury and Wellington  .

What is the connection with Margt Flanagan so I can trace that further also do you have some info that she was born in Ennis?

The name O Malley is not a very commen name in Co Clare as a matter of fact I had a search of the 1901 Census of Ireland and can only count approx 20 individuals of that name the largest group (9) in an area called Lackareagh an are near The Burren and approx 25 miles from Ennis .

There are a huge amount of Hogans listed in the 1901 census but I cannot connect them with Lackareagh.

It is of course possible that Margaret husband may have been born outside the county .

Not very helpful but will do some further research on family.

    Rgds Bill Ryan.

  • Hi

I really appreciate your help with this.

I have some more information about the family that might help with your research.

From the records at Otago University it states:

    O'MALLEY, Margaret (Flanagan)

Born c. 1843, Ennis, Co. Clare

    Arrived 1883, Ionic

From this entry we're assuming Margaret Flanagan married a Mr O'Malley. We have no information about Mr O'Malley apart from a mention (at a family function one afternoon) of a family house in Dublin.

Margaret's daughter Bridget O'Malley (born abt 1861 in County Clare) married Patrick Fee in Lyttleton (New Zealand) in 1884. The only information we have about Patrick Fee was that he was born abt 1859 in County Fermanagh, Ireland.

Patrick arrived into Otago on the ship "James Nicol Fleming" 03 Oct 1877 and his occupation was listed as a farm labourer.

So, the information we are trying to find out is:

    1. Who are the parents of Margaret Flanagan?

    2. When did Margaret Flanagan marry Mr O'Malley and who is Mr O'Malley?

    3. Where is Mr O'Malley from and who are his parents?

    4. When and where was Bridget O'Malley born?

    5. When and where was Patrick Fee born?

    6. Who are Patrick Fee's parents?

    7. Who was Mary Hogan, is she the sister of Bridget O'Malley or a family friend?

I hope I haven't bombarded you with too many questions and really, any information will help us to unravel the family tree.

For some info on me I'm the g-grandson of Bridget Fee. Daughter of Bridget & Patrick Fee

    Kind regards

    Tre
