I have done a DNA test and link to quite a few Americans who go back to these names but their records don't say any more than Ireland. How can I get links to work out how these people are related to my Doherty or Reynolds ancestors?

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Doherty is primarily a Co. Donegal surname and Reynolds is found in a number of counties but is most prominent in Co. Leitrim.

In order to help you out, we would need names and dates of people who were born in Ireland. With common names like Doherty and Reynolds, we would also need parents names.

  • i don't know why I didn't get the link to this last reply but have found it now. My ancestors were Michael McMahon and Susannah also known as Joanna & Joany Reynolds. They had daughter Bridget c 1861 at Ennistymon and then I have records of twins Anne and Mary at Miltown Malbay 1871 and the youngest Cornelius b 1875 also MM. He was living with brothers in 1901 but visiting a family at Moy on cenus night. He was killed in WW1. I also have details of Conor b 1863 bap Ennistymon d 1864, another Mary b 1867 Ennistymon workhouse d bef 1871. I know there was also Terrence born c 1860 prob Ennistymon and died 1913 at Miltown Malbay, John b 1864 bap Dec 1864 Ennistymon & probably the John who died 1947 and Michael b c 1869 who later married Annie White and had 2 sons. I have 4 of the brothers living together in MM in 1901. Michael married c 1905 and others stayed single and living with sister Annie Murphy in 1911. I don't have any evidence of baptism for Terrence but know he exists because of census records. I believe there is at least one more son Thomas who emigrated to USA as I have a fairly close dna match for a woman who's mother was a Thelma Doherty one of twins born to Thomas Doherty in Jan1916 in Pennsylvania (spelt Dougherty in USA) She does not know anything more about Thelma's father as her parents Thomas and Ida separated. Twins seem to be common in the Reynolds branch. I think this Thomas is likely another son of Michael and Bridget but can't find any evidence.

I do have details for the families of Bridget's twin sisters Anne and Mary as Mary also came to Australia and 2 daughters of Anne's came to Australia.

I'm hoping someone can help me find baptisms for this Thomas to prove whether he is brother or cousin and baptism for Terrence and that may lead to any others that I still don't know about.

    Thanks Carmel

  • Dear Carmel:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.  I did not find a birth record for Terence McMahon from Miltown Malbay or Ennistymon, and would you confirm where this family resided in the 1901 Census?  If you can post the links of the 1901 and 1911 Census here, that would be great.

    All the best,

  • Sorry I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote Michael McMahon as he is an ancestor on another branch from Ennis. The one married to Susannsh Reynolds and in Ennistymon is Michael Doherty or O'Doherty.. So it is Terrence Doherty not Terrence McMahon sorry. My great grandmother Bridget used both Doherty and O'Doherty.names. Her brothers lived in Ennistymon Rd Miltown Malbay in 1901 and 1911.

  • Thanks for clearing this up, Carmel.  I was getting very confused!!

You will see the reference to Cornelius Doherty at page 156 of the Clare WW I Dead.  Here is the link:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/history/clare_men_women_great_war_2.pdf

I have found the civil birth record for Terence Doherty born 10 July 1881 to Michael Doherty and Mary McMahon Doherty.  This family resided in Lavareen.  If you think that you are connected to this family, I know some of their descendants.  Please let me know.

Here is a 1901 Census record for this family:  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Clare/Maghereagh/Lavarreen/1073328/

    I look forward to hearing.

    Kind regards,

  • Jane this Terrence born 1881 would not be the one I'm looking for but with names Michael, Terrence and Susan that are in my family, I'd think they would be related somehow. The Terrence I'm looking for is age 36 in 1901 and 50 in 1911. Bit of discrepancy somewhere but, with him listed as head of household in 1901, I believe he is older than brothers John (31), Michael (27) & Cornelius (24). John supposedly bapt Dec 1864 at Ennistymon would be c36 in 1901 and Cornelius was born 1875 so his is close to right age. In 1911 the ages were probably given by the sister Anne who might have had better idea with Terrence listed as 50 then which would make him born c 1860 in betwern the Bridget bapt 29 Oct 1857 at Ennistymon and my ancestor Bridget possibly the unnamed one bapt Apr 1861. Twins Anne and Mary were born at Miltown Malbay in 1871 and there was another Mary b 1867 and Conor b 1863 who died young so the missing ones eg Terrence have to fit in around others we do know.

I did meet a relative 11 years ago when I was in Ireland but he was very ill and unable to help me very much. If you live in that area you may have known him and his wife Paddy and Nancy Murphy who lived in St Joseph's Terrace. Both have since passed away. Paddy was raised by his grandparents Anne (nee Doherty) and John Murphy.

I do have quite a few references to Cornelius and his death in WW 1 but thanks for the link anyway.

I also have school admission records for some at M M National School but they are mainly the children of Anne & John Murphy. Most of their children died young and one went to Cork but there may be family of Michael Murphy b Aug 1908 and died Miltown Malbay area Apr- May 1998. He is buried in Ballard Cemetery with details of burial online.

    Thanks for your help,
    Carmel

  • Dear Carmel:

I have spoken with a local person in the area who will make enquiries on your behalf and she has forwarded my email to this individual.  As soon as I hear from them, I will be in contact with you.  I do know someone who is related to one of the families above (and as you note may be connected).  I will phone her to see if she can shed any further information on this family.

    Kind regards,

    Jane
