I am very interested to learn more about my GGGrandfather William John Blake and his family. I was very pleased to discover recently an article from "Sliabh Aughty" September 2011. page 15 http://eastclareheritage.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Sliabh-Aughty-Vol-5-Pgs.-12-23.pdf  which indicates that the family came from "Blakemount", Crusheen. Using Google Earth I think I have identified "Blakemount" as being Lat  52°58'38.33"N Long   8°54'44.94"W (a little over 4km pretty much north of Crusheen). He was born in 1841 and I think his fathers name was also John William Blake and his Mother was Alecia Butler. He seems to have come to Australia in the mid 1850's aged about 15 but I don't have direct evidence of his departure or arrival. I have no other knowledge of him or the family in Ireland but he did marry Honora Reilly from Gort, Co Galway in Ballarat Victoria, Australian Colonies on 13/2/1866. Gort doesn't seem to be far from Blakemont and I'll make enquiries about her elsewhere on this site.

I do have quite a bit information on William and his descendants in Australia and I'd be very happy to share that with anyone interested.

Hoping you can help. Many thanks.

Peter

  • You have identified the location of Blakemount correctly. I'm familiar with it and related to the O'Grady family which now owns it. If you go into Google Street View and "park your car" facing northeast on the road which passes the house and then swing the view around to the northwest you will see the house a little way up the slope.

The address "Blakemount, Crusheen" is confusing. It's not in Crusheen. The locality is known as Tubber and the house is in the townland of Knockatermon. Just across the road is the Temple na deirca graveyard where most people in Tubber are buried.

  • Blakes from Blakemont

I believe William John Blake is also like to know more about GG grandfather, William John Blake (born 1841) and his father William John Blake (and spouse Alicia Butler).

Peter I would be pleased if you would share any information you have on his decendants in Australia.

Perhaps I could add some family tree/branch information to your information

    Thanks

  • Hi Peter,

Sorry I don't have any information on the Blakes in Ireland. I am a bit stuck studying another branch of my family tree at the moment. My cousin has been doing the Blakes. This is his research results.

    William John Blake (no details)

    +Alicia Butler (no details)

.....William John Blake (Da) (1841 - 1922 Cunnamulla QLD Aus)

    ......+1.Honora Reilly (Nora)

    ......+2. Minnie Violet Bollard 1867 Gundagi - 1900 Cunnamulla

.................Ashley Keral Blake 1892 Wagga Wagga - 1939 Cunnamulla

..................+ Dora Alice Mills 1888 Narrabri NSW - 1961 Brisbane

..............................William Jack Blake 1926 Cunnamulla - 2003 Bowral NSW

    ..............................+ Marie Terese Hannan1930 Marrickville NSW -

............................................Phillipa Blake 1951 Wollongong NSW -

There is a lot of family talk about The cunnamulla Blake's.  Perhaps Da didn't marry Minni Bollard?  I will have to do a lot of work when I get to that part of my family tree.

The branch of the tree I am searching at the moment is Wise - Warren - Rau in the Urana, Albury, Wagga district.  It is interesting that the Blakes hark from the same area.

I have a photo of Ida and Da. Father and daughter. Do you have any photos and are we talking about the same people?
