John and Briget (nee KANE) TROY were born in Ireland, about 1815 for him; her year unknown. John and Bridget (2nd spelling for her) are allegedly in the 1851 census, per someone who saw them and told me. I haven't seen them listed yet, however, they did come to Canada and are in the 1861 census, along with their three sons and daughter, all born in Ireland: Mical, John, Mary and Patrick, all born between 1840 and 1850.  They farmed on Wolfe Island, which is the island in the Saint Lawrence River that juts into Lake Ontario. About 1892 most of the family is found in Rochester, New York. I don't know where John and Bridget are buried yet. The three sons were in Rochester with their families. I haven't found who Mary married, possibly a young man from another island or maybe Kingston, Ontario; I've heard she married someone named HOWARD; no confirmation on that yet. I'd like to hear from anyone related to KANE or TROY from this parish, or a nearby parish.

  • Hi Patricia,

There are four parishes in Clare where both TROY and KANE surnames are found (in 1855 Griffith?s Valuation):

    • Kilballyowen: 1 TROY household, 10 KANE households
    • Killard: 1 TROY household, 1 KANE household
    • Kilrush: 1 TROY household, 11 KANE households
    • Moyarta: 3 TROY households, 12 KANE households

MacLysaght?s The Surnames of Ireland has the following information on these two surnames:

    TROY ? See TROHY

    (O) TROHY, TROY ? ? Troighthigh (troightheach, foot soldier). Originally a Clare sept which early migrated to south Tipperary.  There was also an Anglo-Norman family de Troy from whom Troyswood in Co. Kilkenny was named. IF    Map Tipperary.

Mac KANE, -KAIN ? Variants of the Scottish MacKean but not of the Clare MacKeane.

    (O) KANE, O CAHAN ? Cath?in.  ? As lords of Keenaght the O?Kanes were a leading sept in Ulster up to the time of the Plantation of Ulster.  The name is still very numerous in its original homeland.  See also Keane.

(Mac) KEANE, Mac DAHAN ? Mac Cath?in.   A family of west Clare who were co-arbs of St. Senan.  Map Clare.

    (O) KEANE ? When this is not a variant of the Ulster O?Cahan it is ? C?in of Munster which embodies the personal name Cian.  Inevitably Keane has often been substituted for Kane.  Map Waterford.

You might just try to find TROY / KANE in the Irish phone book at places in the four parishes above. Then ring a few up to see if any of the elders remember any member(s) going to Canada / New York in your time period.

If I think of anything else, will send you another message.

    All the best,
