I am looking for guidance with my Barton family.   John Barton married Catherine Reeves about 1843 in Killaloe.

The marriage registry at St Fannan's is the source of this info.  They had a son, James, in 1844 baptized at St. Fannan's . I am trying to locate any further information on their families.

John and his family immigrated to the United States about 1846 where the lived in New York and had more children.  Any help would be appreciated.  Beverly Forbes Littig

    Hi Bev

    Re: John Barton

Threre is a fabulous book called the Land & People of Killaloe Parish by Sean Kierse published in 2008. This book reconcile the secular records of the Killaloe Parish with the Landlords and their tenants.

    p.85 says, KNOCKADERREEN TOWNLAND:

There was a Mrs Barton at Knockaderreen 1824 Tithe  Applotment Book.

"John Barton of Knockaderren registered as a freeholder at Simmilebridge, on 15 July 1824. He was apparently the only Knockadereen resident to register, which him to vote."

It would appear that the foundation of your John Barton and his family came from the Sixmilebridge Parish.

I should qualify something first my transcriptions only include (so far) Baptism Register Vol 1 & 2 (of 3), and just over halfway through the Marriage Register. There are number of Barton families within the Baptism Register which I believe are connected.

There was only one child Baptism for the John Barton & Catherine Reeves:

    Vol 2, Film 8, Rec: 4373,

    Date: 29 OCT 1844

James (f) BARTON, John & (m) REEVES, Kitty; Res: Killaloe

Spr1: REEVES, Mary, Res: Killlaoe; Spr2: -; Priest: Vaughan, D.

However the extended family, within the marriage register, whenever there was Sponsor or a Witness the females would use their maiden names (which I found in my own family lines as well). It appears that John BARTON and his wife Kitty REEVES were both the sponsors for the niece, Bridget CLANCY. Note REEVES & RIEVES are interchangable spellings.

In decoding the BARTON families you need to look at the related CLANCY families.

John BARTON's sister is Catherine BARTON.

    Vol 2, Film 17, Rec: 4370,

    Date: 18 Jan 1846

Bridget (f) CLANCY, Patrick & (m) BARTON, Cath; Res: Ardataggle

Spr1: BARTON, John, Res: Killaloe, Spr2: RIEVES, Kitty: Res: Killlaloe; Priest: Burke, J.

The Marriage Register transcriptions are not complete to assist at this stage but will get back to you another time.

I have enclosed a detail transcript of all the BARTON related baptisms found in Vol 1 & 2 to assist you.

    Kind Regards

  • Jeff, Have been looking at info you sent.I have found baptism for James at St Fannans church in 1844 and marriage for John and Catherine Reeves at same church in 1843.  Is this church in Sixmilebridge  Parish? Can's seem to access Griffiths today so will have to check tomorrow.  John and Catherine immigrated to US in 1846-47 and went on to have seven more children in Troy New York.

  • Hi Bev,

The church is likely St Flannans (not Fannans) which is in the town of Killaloe.

    Hi Bev

    RE: GRIFFITH

I previously stated that I have transcribing the Killaloe Parish Registers; most days I spend about 3-4hrs on it per day; so it is a slow process. I am currently working on the Marriage Register. I will get back to you with your other queries at another time. I know that Ancestory.com and other places do have their own transcriptions, the reason for my undertaking such a task was that I was wanting more geographic information on family structures not just names; ultimately Killaloe Parish is a very unique Parish that actually provide the Residence of Parents/Sponsors and Witness.

    ANYWAY;

I have attached to the message ALL the Griffith enteries in Vol 1 & Vol 2 of the Baptism Register, with as Surname of FATHER or MOTHER or a SPONSOR.

    Best Wishes with quest

    Kind Regards

  • Hello Jeff,

Guess my proofreading didn't catch the misspelling of St. Flannan's Church. Thanks for the catching it.

Thanks for taking the time to send baptism info. I dont think I have any Griffins. You were kind enough to send me the Barton baptisms which I really appreciate.  I was referring to Griffiths Valuation in my post. I apologize if I wasn't clear. I am trying to find the Townland, Barony, and PLU/Tenemant names.  I have the Parish as Killaloe and Province as Munster, County Clare.

I know you are very busty transcribing so certaqinly appreciate all your help, Jeff.  Bev

I have now completed the transciption of Killaloe Parish Marriages. I have prepared the attached report to assist your family research, there wasnt many BARTON / REEVE (RIEVES) records.

The message board has a link to National Library with the Census ; there is Bartons mention here have you seen this?

P.S. I am still yet to complete Vol 3 of the Killaloe Parish Baptism Register, so that will take some time but I will remember to post a revised Baptism of the BARTON / REEVES (RIEVES) when I have finished.

Let the message know if we can be of any further assistance.

  • Jeff, thank you for the Killaloe parish marriage files.   That helps quite a bit. I did find the Library information as I was searching about.   If I have any more questions I will post  on teh message board.  By the way my husband was born in Australia-Corowa NSW.  We travelled to Adelaide a few years ago and loved it!  Was just there in June to visit family in Sydney and St. Arnaud.  Take care,

    Bev

  • Jeff, I was just going through the Killaloe Parish Marriages you transcribed and listed on the message board for me.  Can you clarify something  please?  On the actual register for John Barton and Catherine Reeves it indicates they are both from Killaloe, however on your transcription it says John is from Kilcredon.  Just checking to see if I am reading the original correctly.  Thanks, Bev

  • Hi all,

I am still trying to locate informarion John Barton's sister Catherine who married Patt Clancy.  I have baptism information for a daughter,Bridget in 1846.I cannot seem to locate either a baptismal record for Catherine or a marriage record.  Her brother,John Barton was born in 1820 to James Barton and Mary Lah(t)iff and baptized at St. Flannan's RC church. John and his wife Catherine Reeves also married at St Flannan's and had a son James baptized there in 1844.

I would appreciate any guidance as where to look next.

    Thanks,Bev

  • Hi Bev

I was helping you last year with your queries. Since then I am in the final stages of the complete transcript of the Killaloe Registers.

I have found your marriage you are looking for:

    See Film 36 Record: 638

23 Feb 1841, Groom: Patt CLANCY, Bride: Cath BARTON, Res: Ardatagle, Witness1: Michael KELLY, Clunfadda, Witness2: Bridget BURNS, Ballyvally, Priest: Fr. John Burke.

With regret pre 1828 Baptism dont exist for Killaloe.

The brother John BARTON, born 1820, there is no record likewise for his sister, Catherine BARTON.

Let us know if we can be any further assistance.

    Kind Regards

  • Hi Bev

I think there is another page that commented on but isnt linked to your existing research.

    REEVES Family:

Last year I recommend that you obtain your own copy of

LAND and PEOPLE of KILLALOE PARISH:

if so I direct you to page: 296 and 297.

Although these Reeves (because there as so few) and may not likely be directly related every clue must be investigated to decoded and eliminate:

William Maunsell Reeves was landlord of 300 acres of Gortmagy. William Maunsell of Vostersbeg, Co Cork and Burrane, Co. Clare, J.P., Barrister-at-law, born September 1788, was the second son of Robert Reeves of Platten, Co Meath and Burrane, Co. Clare. His mother Mary was daughter of William Maunsell of Limerick.

The material then leads onto other family members and connections, on p.297.

These need to be pulled apart by you for the possibility. Throughout the Kierse's book it clearly identifies the close relationship between tenants and landlords, in my family the Quinlivan's (tenant) ended up marrying Anne Browne (who was a daughter of the Landlord.

The priests often made mistakes, at the information they recorded is subject frailty: errors (spellings), omissions and transpositions.

    ...............................

By the end of this month I am publishing the complete transcription of Killaloe (Baptisms and Marriages)

    http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6768

At some point I will also forward a copy on to www.irelandxo.com

Let me know how you go, information in Ireland is getting better and better, certainly achievable than ten years ago.

    Kind Regards

    Jeff,

Thank you for the help. I do have the book and will check out the information when I return to town.

Very excited to see your transcriptions for Killaloe.

I have had the same issues with reading church records. Trying to decipher ones writing is trying at best.  I will let you know how I am progressing.

    Thank you again
