Now that parish records have been digitized, they helped me make a huge discovery in conjunction with Griffith's Valuation. I found that my great-great-great grandparents, John Storen & Catherine Hickey, were from Earlhill, O'Briensbridge in County Clare. John was born in about 1813 and Catherine was born in about 1820. The couple had 3 children that I know of, John, Brigid & Margaret, and then emigrated to Canada. However, I suspect that Catherine may have died in Ireland before the family moved. I can't find any record of her in Canada.

And while I see the first names of other family members in Ireland, I can't tell how they are related or who the parents of John & Catherine might be. Any advise on where to find more info? I would also love to find a marriage record for John & Catherine and a death record for Catherine.

I live in the US and several family members and I want to visit Ireland in the next 2 years, and specifically the places where our families lived.

Thank you!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I think John and Catherine were born before church records are available. There are two possible parishes: Doonass where records start in 1851 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0771   and Killaloe http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0793   where records start in 1828.  I assume the marriage took place in the late 1830s or early 1840s. I was unable to find a record. Possibly they were married in Doonass prior to the availability of records.

I did locate your October 2013 posting and reply from Col.

  • Hi Patty

RE: JOHN STOREN & CATHERINE HICKEY of KILLALOE PARISH:

Note - spellings of Storen, Storan and Storin are interchangable, likewise: Hickey, Hicky and Hickery. The priest's spelling is not a hard fast rule. They struggle with spelling names of places (consistantly) all the time.

I also have connections with the Storan/Quinlivan families at Killaloe (notice a Quinlivan reference below); from my research I can give you the following information: I found 6 children of the marriage. In the Quinlivan's who mirgrated to South Australia. There was multiply marriages between families, where a (A) brother from one family marries a (B) sister from another, then reverse a sister from (A) marriage another brother from (B) if you know what I mean, and multiples crossovers thereof. In South Australia there was community families where first cousins had the same genetic family core place. In the brief study multiple Storan marries multiple Hickey (and their various spelllings), they are still part of the same core family. Also beyond this more of the Storans in the Killaloe Parish would be related in some way or another.

My work is not yet finished I have transcribed Vol 1 & 2, Vol 3 is to come later and I am half way through the marriage register. So other information will come to light later on.

  • This is wonderful information - I can't thank you enough! And the relocation of Storens to Australia would certainly explain my DNA match to a family in Australia. I know that we are connected in my paternal grandmother's line but we haven't identified a common ancestor. However, the Storens are in that line.

  • Dear Patty

Sorry I wasnt able to complete all the information that i was going to share with you the other day.

Before to place the following information into correct balance, in your above initial paragraph, you stated that John Hickey was born in 1812, is this based on a death certificate or some other source document? When did John Storen migrate from Ireland?

In decoding family patterns there is a usual pattern, not hard and fast but it gives you some clues what to look for and string together.

    IRISH Naming Traditions:

    1st son - father's father

    2nd son- mother's mother

    3rd son - father

    4th son - father's oldest brother

5th son - father's oldest brother or mother's oldest brother.

    1st daughter- mother's mother

    2nd daughter - father's mother

    3rd daughter - mother

    4th daughter - mother's oldest sister

    5th daughter - mother's 2nd oldest sister of father's oldest sister.

The pattern of 4th & 5th sons might be interrupted to name a son for a favourite saint, and at all time the pattern might be interrupted to name a succesive son after an older son who might have died.

HICKEY and STOREN - FARMING PARTNERSHIPS:

In answering your question from regarding the parents of Hickey:

After the 1800's the Catholic church placed surrounding grounds up for tentiture, the Landlords were based at County Limerick, there is a close relationship between the tenants and their landlords (off topic, S. Kierse).

In my experience in balancing a correct balance to the Griffith Valuation Records, Tithe Records, my Quinlivan families had multiple holdings within the Killaloe Parish, it appears they were all over the place as they had many difference crops in many different areas.  In the Killaloe Parish was such a very small community townships all the family groups new each other's family. At first glance there appears to be multiple say like my Daniel Quinlivan and in fact if you narrow it down it is limited to perhaps, two the elderly father and possibly the son or they are the same person. This is supported by the overall Baptism and Marriage Registers, residential movements.

According to Land & People of Killaloe Parish (2008); by Sean Kierse p.92,

"The following Lackareagh tenants registered as forty-shilling freeholders in the 1820's. James and Conor Hogan of Lackareagh Beg, registered on 11.5.1824 for the lives of Tim Hickey, John Storen and James Browne."

p.323, Kierse, talks about the township of O'Briensbridge - July 1829:

    Men in farming partnership:

    • John Storen, Acres 2 ...
    • Michael Barry, Thomas Quinlivan & Michael Storen, Arces: 21 a 2 r 0 p: ...
    • Michael Hickey, Acres: 7
    • Ned Quinlivan, Acres: 4
    • John Storen & Thomas Tucker, Acres: 7
    • Matthew Storen, Acres 2

But by Griffith Valuation of 1852, (Kierse, p.325)

All the elders of 1829, had either, died out, migrated or moved on.  However my Dan Quinlivan is.

    • Daniel Quinlivan (mutiple listings)
    • James Storan and Daniel Quinlivan.

I point out (Kierse, p.327) further references to Griffith Valuation of 1852

    • John Hickey & Thomas Murphy.

Until you can confirm some other information I am placing the following theory:

John Storen who married Catherine Hickey.

The father of John Storen was John Storen, the father of Catherine Hickey was Tim Hickey. If there was a 2nd son born (or the 7th child) of the marriage his name would most likely be Timothy. In your family lines has the John and Timothy came through?

Are you indicating that from Canada only three children survived (John, Bridget & Margaret) and Mary, Catherine, Ellen perhaps were infant fatalities of the Potato Famine?

STOREN & QUINLIVAN in KILLALOE and AUSTRALIA.

My mother's maiden name was Quinlivan and we are decendants of Killaloe; father's side from County Cavan.

We are decendants of Dan QUINLIVAN and Winifred CARTY, they migrated to South Australia Feb 1865, with their children.

The was an QUINLIVAN / STOREN marriage, Dan Quinlivan is obviously my direct relative, John and Margaret are his brother and sister.

From the earliest Baptism Record in Killaloe Register

    Vol.1, Film p.6, Record: 18

    DATE: 8th June 1828

JOHN, (f) QUINLIVAN, John, (m) STOREN, Joanna, Res: Clonboy

Spr 1: QUINLIVAN, Dan, Res: Clonboy, Spr 2: QUINLIVAN, Margaret, Res: Clonboy,

    Priest: M. McMahon

    Marriage:

    Film p.20; Record 326

    DATE: 2nd February 1836

QUINLIVAN, Dan, Res: Monaglee & CARTY, Winny, Res: Ardataggle

Wt 1: QUINLIVAN, Patrick, Res: Ardataggle; Wt 2: McINERNEY, Conor, Capaheigh

    Priest J. Glesson

NOTE: I have Australia Death Certificates that supports the information.

This record show there was a continous family connection between the QUINLIVAN and STOREN families for over 35 years at Killaloe.

    Film, p.57, Record: 1399

    DATE: 12th January 1863

    STORAN, Matthew & BUNFIELD, Catherine

Wt: QUINLIVAN, Dan, , Wt 2: BRIEN, Ellen

    ............................

Then the family relationship continued beyond Feb 1865 in South Australia.

One of sons of my Dan Quinlivan, was Patrick.

Patrick Quinlivan marries Catherine Meers in South Australia

    11th August 1868

the witness was (cousin) Michael STORAN and (sister) Winifred QUINLIVAN.

    MIchael STORAN - possibly

There multiple Baptisms I haven't isolated which one he is regsiter but hunch is either:

    Vol.1 Film p.114 Rec: 3769

    Date: 13th September 1842

MICHAEL, (f) STORAN, Ned, Res: Garonboy, (m) McINERNEY, Honora

Spr1: SCANLAN, Mathew, Res: Garonboy, Spr2: SCANLAN, Honora, Res: Garonboy,

    Priest: J. Glesson

Reason: McInerney was a witness to the Dan Q. marriage.?

    Vol 2, Film p.13, Rec: 4563

    DATE: 1st June 1845

MICHAEL, (f) STORIN, James, Res: Clonboy; (m) CLEARY, Margaret

Spr1: BARRY, Patrick, Res: Clonboy Spr2: SKEAHAN, Mary, Res: Ballyneavin

    Preist: J. Burke

Reason: Clonboy was part of residence of area where the Quinlivans and Storens were originally living next to each other?

TO be honest I havent gone into Michael STORAN's history too much but offering genesis possibilities. I think this is the most likely Michael because of the close connection of the Griffith Valuation of 1852; where James Storan was in partnership with my Daniel Quinlivan.

    ................................................................

Now something I would like to ask you.

Where in Canada did the John STOREN reside? I have accountanted for all family Quinlivan children of Dan & Winifred Quinlivan, accept for one their first child/son Edmund Quinlivan, (born 1836, film p.70, Rec: 2165)  he did not come to Australia, I am guessing that some of the family members might have migrated to Canada.

Anyway hope we can help each other in some way.

    Kind Regards

  • Wow, Jeff, this is so much information to consider! Here are the answers to your questions:

I only knew about 3 of the children - I hadn't found any information on the other 3 so I just wasn't aware of them. Interestingly, however, I can't find all of them in Canadian records so they could have been victims of the famine. Now that I have all their names I need to do more research.

I determined John Storen's year of birth from his death record, which lists his age as 47 in May 1860.

The family settled in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They emigrated between 1848, when the youngest child was born in Ireland, and 1852, when John Storen married his second wife, Bridget Campion. They were married in the Basiique Notre Dame in Montreal, and much of the family is buried in Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery which has a wonderful online searchable database of people buried in the cemetery. Just be sure to search on alternate spellings to find everyone - I found a few of my relatives that way. I just searched on Quinlivan and only came up with Sarah Quinlivan whose husband was Cooper Henry.

  • Hi -- I also have Storans in my family. Sarah Storan, born about 1830-1835ish, was the daughter of James Storan and Sarah Kennedy. Even with the parish registers being somewhat indexed now, I have found nothing, No marriage of James and Sarah and no birth for their daughter, Sarah. No trace of any other children. Sarah married Patrick Moloney of Killaloe in either 1852 or 1854 (just can't recall which right now). They married in St. John's Parish, Limerick City, and I got their certificate from Roots Ireland. There is no indication that Sarah was born in Limerick, even though Storan is primarily a Limerick name. There are a couple of reasons they may have married in Limerick -- Patrick was a boatman and could have sailed them down there, and it's possible Patrick was "illegitmate" (as were two other siblings over 10 years to the same couple!) and did not want to marry in Killaloe (or couldn't). I believe his mother was a Nihill. I have no death certificate for Patrick, but he died in Killaloe. In 1898, Sarah Storan Moloney moved to NYC and lived with one of her sons. I have her parents' names from her NYC death certificate.

I have found two POSSIBLE Sarah Kennedys born in Tipperary, one with an O'Keefe mother, which is a name I see often in my DNA matches,... but I have no definitive records on the issue.

I will be in Killaloe in August and would really like to have a bit more nailed down before I go. If anyone has information that might be related to my family, I would be very grateful.

    Patty

p.s. -- I saw a post elsewhere about the book, Land & People of Killaloe Parish (2008), by Sean Kierse. I hope to obtain a copy when I am in town.

  • It's been a few years since I posted here seeking information about the Storen & Hickey families. I'm returning now because my husband and I (and several Storen cousins) will be visiting Ireland this August. Any advice on places we need to visit while we're in County Clare? Of course I would like to see any places related to my family who came from there, but I'm not sure what that would be or where to start.

    Thank you!
