Hi List,

My wife, Mary, has been active on this Message Board.  I have just joined (this is a great site!). Mary has been searching for the non-emigrating ancestors of her gggrandfather Cornelius Loughery, born 1832 in "Gort", possibly the son of a "Martin and Katie".

Digging around the dusty shelves of a local courthouse this last Monday, Mary came across an original death document filled in by his surviving wife that clearly indicates Cornelius's parents were Martin "Lockery" <US spelling> and "Katie Pine".  It says Cornelius was born "Gort, Ireland"  "23 July 1832" (we had thought 15 July 1832).  Knowing his mother's maiden name is a big step forward !!

In the Tithe Applot. or Griffith Val., I could find no Pine's (or Pyne's either) in Co. Galway, but a number of both spellings in Co. Clare, including a Thomas Pyne (Tithe Appot) in T.L. Barroe, Feakle Parish, just across border from Beagh: and in the Griffith, were 6 Pyne entries in Ruan Parish - which is not too far from Beagh.

Is it likely that Pine and Pyne are spelling variations of the same name?

Anyone have connections to Pine's or Pyne's from thereabouts?  thanks much,

Andy Wegner

P.S. It is interesting to note, that there are also quite a number of Pine's and Pyne's (in Tithes and Griffith) in and near the Parish of Kilmihil in Co. Clare, the same parish that the Griffith lists a Martin Loughery.  I guess we need to look both places.

  • Dear Andy:

Your search gets more interesting!!  Feakle is not too far from Beagh, so it is a possibility.  The Feakle records are online through the Clare Library website, although they only start in 1860, I believe.  However, it is worth a look.

Certainly, there would be variants in name spellings:  Loughery, Lockrey, Loughrey, etc.  Pine, Pyne would also be common.

I am going to email your wife some information that I have re my own Lougherys.  I might see Eamon tonight and we will put our heads together on this puzzle.

    All the best,

    Jane.

  • Jane,  I echo Mary's comments.  Look forward to looking at your Loughery info.  We are gathering quite a collection of Loughery data for the Beagh, Kilbeacanty, Inchicronan Parishes and just might be able to connect with yours (??)  cheers,  Andy

  • As mentioned earlier, we have discovered the maiden name of the mother of the Cornelius LOUGHERY whose ancestors we seek.  Cornelius was born July 1832, Gort, Co., the son of Martin LOUGHERY and "Katie" PINE.  Since he was born in Gort, we have been a little skeptical that his father was the Martin LOUGHERY of Kilmihil Paris, Co. Clare, as given in the Griffith Val.

But now in checking the exact location specified by Griffith Val. of this Martin LOUGHERY (extreme west side of Sheeaun Townland), we find he was on the same road and only 1/2 mile from where a John PINE lived and 1 mile from a Michael PINE, in the immediately adjacent townland of Leitrim.  Now we’re not so sure.

It is possible his wife was from Kilmihil and Martin moved from Beagh parish area to his wife’s homeland in Co. Clare, Kilmihil Parish.  I’m wondering whether the famine years may have cause a lot of migrations??

Anyone have any connections or info about the PINE family of County Clare?
