Hello,

I am searching for any relatives of my great grandparents, John Grace and Bridget [Tuohy].

They migrated in July 1863 to Port Philip, Victoria on board the "Star Of India" together with John's parents, Thomas and Margaret [MacNamara].

Am unsure when and where Thomas was born but Margaret was born at Silvergrove Co. Clare around 1808. They were married at Silvergrove around 1833.

John Grace was born in Co. Clare around 1835, but not sure where.  Bridget was born at Bodyke, Co. Clare around 1830.  They were married in May 1858 at Feakle, Co. Clare.

John had six siblings but to my knowledge, only one migrated with them; Catherine who was 12 months old.  Sadly, she died during the voyage and was buried at sea off Africa.

Bridget had about ten siblings as far as I can tell and at least three of them appear to have migrated to New York. A brother, Patrick, was shown in the 1911 Census to be farming with his family at Knockbrack, Drummod Co. Clare.  A sister Mary, was married to a Denis O'Keeffe and lived in the Feakle area.

Would be most grateful for any information.

  • Hi Lawrence,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information on the family makes a connection with you.

In the meantime, it may be an idea to contact the Clare County Library Local Studies Centre. They have an excellent county collection of records and may be able to give you some advice as to what records may be available to you. Here is a link to their webpage:

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/library/local-studies/locstudi1.htm

You could also try contacting the local parish priest in Kilnoe to see if he can offer any assistance. Here is a link to the contact page:

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Dear Lawrence:

I read your message and I believe that there may be a list of baptismal records online through the Clare County Library website.  You can access them through www.clarecountylibrary.ie/genealogy.  If you look at the donated material tab at the right side of the page, and click on births, marriages and deaths, there were will be a list showing what has been transcribed and donated from various parishes around the County.  I believe that the Tuohy name has been done, and I know that the O'Callaghan's Mills records are there as well.

If you need further assistance, please get back to me and I will see what I can do for you.

Many thanks for your query and the very best of luck on your research.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
