I am most interested in finding any information I can about my great Grandparents. My great grandfather was Pete McNamara, married to Mary Likens. They had a son, Howard, born approxamatley 1900. Un fortunately there is no one left to ask any pertinent questions. I know they immigrated to the U.S.A., but I'm not sure when. One day I would love to travel to Ireland and visit the county they came from.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thank you

Mary Jane McNamara

  • Dear Mary Jane:

Do you have any dates with regard to Peter's birth or Mary's birth? Was their son, Howard born in Ireland or the U.S.?   In addition, do you have a year when they might have emigrated?  Any additional information might make a  big difference.  You can look through the Clare Library website as they have a lot of useful genealogical information.  Their website is www.clarelibrary.ie/genealogy.

If you have any further questions, please get back to me.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • I totally forgot about this. My grandfather, Howard McNamara, was born in county Clare. I'm not sure what year. I think they emigrated to the U.S. around 1904. That's all the information I have. His mother and father was Mary Likens McNamara and his father was Pete.

    Thank you,

    Mary Jane McNamara

  • Hi Mary Jane,

I had a look at the 1901 census and there is nobody by the name of Howard McNamara listed for the county of Clare. It is possible that he was born after 1901 and before his parents emigrated in 1904. Did he habe any siblings that you know of?

There are no families by the name of Likens listed for the entire country of Ireland in the 1901 census. Could the surname be spelled another way?

All of the Peter McNamaras living in Co. Clare in 1901 are listed below. None are married to a Mary. Several look as though they might fit the age profile of a young single man who might have emigrated jn 1904.

    Hope this helps.
    Maria.

  • Hi Mary Jane:

I am a local volunteer with IrelandXO in addition to being the Volunteer Coordinator and I live in County Clare.

I replied to your query several years ago and I see that you have recently updated it.

There isn't any reference to a Howard McNamara in either the 1901 or the 1911 Census.

There isn't any reference to a Peter McNamara marrying a Mary Likens.

However, I have found a FindAGrave reference to a Howard Likens McNamara on Ancestry which is a subscription site.

The FindAGrave reference might be of interest to you as it notes that this Howard was born in 1904 in Ohio.

Here is the link for your reference:  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/128370628/howard-likens-mcnamara

If you have any other information that you would like to share with me, please feel free to do so.  I am also active in a local genealogy society here and I will see what I can find for you.

    Stay safe.

    All the best,

    Jane
