A record lists a James McBride leaving Ireland on the ship   the SERPENT of Baltimore. The list of
passengers were sworn by Archd. McCockell, master, at Londonberry, 30 April, 1803. It lists as passengers, two McBrides. One being a Catherine McBride age 24 and James McBride, a farmer, age 25. It states they were from the town of Rosquil in the County Clare.  What parish would they be in.  How do I find this.

  • You can use this link to find all the townlands in any county:

Unfortunately I can?t see one in Co. Clare called Rossquil (or similar). Townland names did sometimes change and become obsolete. Perhaps someone with local knowledge may recognise this, but otherwise I can?t help identify where it is/was.

  • Dear EthelSue

I have had a quick look for you on the Clare Library website (www.clarelibrary.ie/genealogy).  They have a list of townland information that is very helpful.  There is not a "Rosquil" listed, but there are a number of similar sounding townlands, and while it is tedious, it might be worth looking at.  In addition, you can also look through Griffith's Valuation and Tithe Applotment Books by surname, and this may assist you in finding out more information.

If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
