Hello,

I will be visiting Ireland late September early October this year...2014. I will be visiting Tulla and Kilkenny to try and find more history on my GGGrandparents William Obrien and Jane Calleen  /  Cullen, who had their family in the Tulla district......one of their sons came to Perth Western Australia he was William Frances Obrien and he married Anastasia Jackman who came from Kilkenny in 1891.  Where would be best place to start my search? I have been told to start with Church Records....could someone please give me some help or suggestions.

Kind regards.....Annolajon.

In addition to Church records, civil registration of births, marriages and deaths began in 1864.

Can I suggest that you post your message in the Tulla Co. Clare parish page. We have a very active group in that area and I'm sure they will do their best to assist you.

  • Hi Nola,

Are you in Western Australia??  My gggrandparents left Ireland (Co. Clare) with some of their children in 1857 and settled in Victoria.  One of those children, Michael, had a son William and a daughter Frances.  My grandfather, Robert, and 2 of his sisters went from Vic. to WA in the late 1890's early 1900's - and as they were quite young I thought that there must have been someone over there to help them.  If you think there may be a connection could you e-mail me and we could talk further??  regards and good luck with your visit - I was in Ireland in 2012 doing the same thing and am going again next year (armed with more information this time!!).

  • Hello Valerie,

Thanks for your informatiion but I am not sure if there is any connection with our Obriens....I have hit that old brick wall with William. The only information I got about him was from his death cetificate here in Perth WA were I live. Also from Ireland reaching out.....they found a family of OBrien with his parents name and some siblings in the Tulla district and I am having no luck with them.  My William lived in Stirling Street Perth and through the Battey Libruary have found out he was a Railway man  (Porter). On his marriage certificate the wittness's were from his wife's family  (Jackman). He died in 1912.  I have always though it strange that he has seemed to have come here on his own and have often wondered if some of his siblings were already here.

    Kind regards....Nola.
