Looking for information about my great granmother Mary Brien /o Brien she married my great granfather Michael Manning probably in the late 1850,s .I have not sourced a marriage record for them.Their first child was born 1858 according to Aghada Parish birth/baptism records. They had 11 children,10 lived.

Michael Manning died 1877,

The 1911 census has Mary aged 72yrs giving an approx d.o.b of 1839.

I can not locate death records either. Her name is not on headstone where Michael is buried (Corkbeg)

any info or pointers gratefully recieved .

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has an 1854 marriage record for Michael Manning and Mary O'Brien in the Aghada RC records. I assume this record is for your great-grandparents.

Roots is a pay site to view the transcription of the church record.

Corkbeg parish is in the Middleton registration district. I found the death index record below. The age shown on the record is provided by the informant which may explains why she is about 6 years older than in 1911. You can get a copy of the record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros.

  • Thank you Roger for your help.

I had alook at the 1854 Marriage Record on rootsireland .It only states that the Husbands father was Manning and the wifes father was Brien , no first names and no Mothers names.

It states Witness 1 as :Patrick Brien

Witness 2 as : Thomas Manning.

With regard to the Death index you found for 1920 ,do I geit at thr GRO in Dublin or can I get it in Cork ?

    Regards,

You can get the record at the GRO in Dublin. I live in the States and I print a GRO form off the Internet and mail to the GRO office in Roscommon town Co. Roscommon. I don't know if the Roscommon office allows walk-ins like Dublin. Below are the instructions I send to folks who live in England, Australia, USA, etc.

    Roger

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Hi Roger ,I tried following your instructions and failed, i downloaded form allright but  I am not great with online app ,any way I could not put tick in box for photocopy. So I rang GRO ,they said a link has been removed in the last few days and I could not apply for my greatgrans death cert on line. I have to wtite to them or call into my Cork Registrar office. He also said online Deaths are from 1921 onwards ! But I would have no problem if it was a Birth cert I was looking for.

I will go to Cork branch next week, thanks for help.

    Regards

  • Mary,

I believe Michael Manning, who was married to Mary Brien/o Brien, was the older brother of my great-great grandfather Patrick Manning.  Patrick and other of the siblings moved to Fall River, MA during the Great Famine.  I believe Michael may have been a teacher and moved to New South Wales, Australia.  I have no idea how/why he wound up buried in Cork. The family history i have is consistent with Michael and Mary having 11 children.

If I can find anything else, I will share; but this may be the only information I have.

I saw this old message because of the comment by John Manning. Here is the death record for Mary Manning that you were looking for, (third record on page) https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1920/05121/4409263.pdf

Also, you may be the Mary Hickey/Manning who is a DNA match to my wife, Susan McDonnell

  • Hi Roger,

    Lovely to connect again,

Yes I am a dna match with your wife  Susan ,I have not made any further inroads on figuring out  how we are connected Yet !

Thank you for above link for my Great granmothers death record. It certainly is a coincidence having a response from a John Manning and yourself on the 3rd April 2020 about Mary Manning nee Brien as the 100th anniversary of her death falls on April 4,she died on this date in  1920 and it was an Easter Sunday at the time.

Roger back in  2014 when I first posted I eventually located her death through irisnewspaperarchives.com,the got death record.

I still don,t know exactly when  she was born or who her parents were as there were / are several Mary Brien/ o Briens circa 1834 ish.

    Kindest Regards ,

  • Hi John Manning,

Re : Michael Manning and spouse  Mary Manning nee Brien/ o Brien,

Great to hear from a relation, I have alot of research done  into several of  Michaels siblings who went to Fall River  . There are still a couple of them who went to Fall River  I have not been able to follow up on other than that they were there.

When I started I had no knowledge of any of them ,my great granaunts and great gran uncles.I just knew my greatgranfather Michael was buried locally in Corkbeg Cemetery ,he died in 1877.

I have heard  before of the possibility that My greatgranfather Michael went to Australia ,I have not found any records  around this, If so  he was back in Ireland by 1854 married and producing children .

John I would like to communicate further with you if that is ok by you.  This is my email address : maryhickey61@gmail.com.

    Cheers for now,

    Mary Hickey nee Manning
