Hello

I will be travelling to Aghada from Perth Western Australia in the first week of August 2014 and am hoping to research my family origins. I know that Michael Fitzgerald married Norah Barry and they had at least four children baptised in the Aghada Parish Catholic Church: John (1816), Mary (1820), Michael (1823) and Ellen (1829). They lived at Knockanemornay when John was born and Barrykilla for the other three. John (my g-g-grandfather) married Mary Doyle and emigrated to Australia in 1838. Ellen married Maurice Walsh and went to USA sometime after the 1870s. I would love to make contact with anyone currently living in the area who may be connected with my family.

I don't know if it is of interest but Roots Ireland has an 1856 marriage in the Aghada RC church records for Maurice Walsh and Ellen Fitzgerald. Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record.

I could not locate Barrykilla townland. I did look at the 1901 census for Knockanemorney and there were two Walsh families and one Fitgerlad family.

  • Hi! My great great grandmother was, I believe, Hannah Fitzgerald for Aghada district. Hannah married ' ? Magner' and had a son Michael Magner. She then married Richard Bride who owned the Imperial Hotel in Aghada. Theri daughter Abigail Burgess then ran the business with her husband John Burgess.

I've been uable to find any records about Hannah, the Fitzgerald connection or the Magner connection Is she in your Fitzgerald family?

  • Dear Roger

Thank you so much for your prompt reply - this website is amazing !! Yes I do have the record for Ellen F and Maurice Walsh - they are definitely connected to our line.

I hadn't thought about the 1901 Census, but will check it out and see if I can make a connection. Barrykilla is named on a few old maps (Barracille in some) - it was immediately west of Knockanemornay.

    Thanks again for your suggestions

    Marg

  • Hi Barred Bandicoot

Thanks for the info about Hannah. I don't have any record of her, but she could well have been related as Honora and its variation, Hannah, were names that carried on in the family after they moved to Australia. I would like to follow this up with a bit of research - do you have any dates for her at all (birth, marriages or death) ??

    Cheers

    Marg

  • Hi again Barred Bandicoot. I have just found 10 Honora Fitzgeralds born in Aghada between 1805 and 1838 (assuming your Hannah was actually Honora). None of them had my ancestors, Michael Fitzgerald and Norah (Honora) Barry, as their parents. I guess some of their fathers could have been related to my Michael, but it would seem that our connection is not close.

    Cheers

  • Hi Marg, Thank you for that quick reply filled with info! I had never thought of the Honora/Hannah alternative. My Hannah was born about 1808 and died in Aghada in November 1878. I haven't been able to confirm that she ever was a Fitzgerald but family story says she was.

Enjoy your trip to Aghada! How wonderfully exciting :-)!! I intend to do same one day down the track. Can you let us know how easy it is to access the information when you get there, please? - It will be interesting to hear about it.

    Bon voyage and happy hunting,
